India's Sainyam on jun 3   claimed the gold medal in the women's 10 m air pistol competition to start the country's campaign in the ISSF Junior World on a rousing note.

Sainyam shot 238 in the eight-women final to finish on top of the podium, even as the other Indian in fray, Suruchi Inder Singh settled for the sixth place with 154.1.

Korea's Kim Minseo claimed the silver medal with a total score of 236, while the bronze went to Liu Heng Yu of Taipei, who shot 216.9.

Sainyam was placed third in the qualification with 571, while Suruchi was in fifth place.

Several trains have been cancelled while many were diverted following a major accident in Odisha's Balasore where three trains collided claiming the lives of 233 people and injuring around 900.

According to Railway spokesperson Amitabh Sharma, the accident took place around 7 pm on June 2.

In one of the worst railway disasters in India, at least 233 people were killed and more than 900 injured when three trains collided one after another in a horrific sequence in Odisha's Balasore district, setting off a massive rescue and evacuation process.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik declared one-day state mourning on Jun 3 , saying no state celebrations will take place on the day.

Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena said the rescue operation is still continuing in one of the severely mangled coaches which crashed and fell on another bogie.

Autopsies of the victims have started in different places. The victims who have been identified and whose kin are present are being handed over the bodies. All efforts are being made to complete the postmortem of the victims soon, said Jena.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reached Bahanaga railway station where the mishap occurred and said top priority is on rescue and relief works. "Best possible healthcare will be provided to the injured passengers in Cuttack, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar or at the hospitals in Kolkata," he said.

A high-level committee will inquire to ascertain the root cause behind the accident. The Commissioner of Railway Safety will also conduct an inquiry into the matter, said Vaishnaw.

The mishap occurred when 10 to 12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed causing them to fall onto the opposite track. Subsequently, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express collided with the bogies of the Coromandel Express, leading to the derailment of three to four of its own coaches.

The train crash happened near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Balasore district, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on jun 2 , prompting the Railway Ministry to order a probe.

India and China on May 31 held in-person diplomatic talks in New Delhi  and discussed proposals for disengagement in the remaining friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh in a "frank and open manner."

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said both sides agreed to hold the 19th round of high-level military talks at an early date to achieve the objective of restoration of peace and tranquillity in the border areas.

The meeting took place under the framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC).

The Indian and Chinese troops are locked in an over three-year confrontation in certain friction points in eastern Ladakh even as the two sides completed disengagement from several areas following extensive diplomatic and military talks.

The MEA said the two sides agreed to continue discussions through military and diplomatic channels. It was the 27th meeting of the WMCC. The previous WMCC meeting was held in Beijing on February 22.

The Joint Secretary (East Asia) from the Ministry of External Affairs led the Indian delegation. The Chinese side was led by the Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The 18th round of high-level military talks between the two sides were held on April 23 during which they agreed to stay in close touch and work out a mutually acceptable solution to the remaining issues in eastern Ladakh at the earliest.

Days later, Chinese defence minister Li Shangfu visited India to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a nearly 45-minute bilateral meeting with Li.

In the talks, Singh told his Chinese counterpart that China's violation of existing border agreements "eroded" the entire basis of ties between the two countries and that all issues relating to the frontier must be resolved in accordance with the existing pacts.

On May 4, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar conveyed to his Chinese counterpart Qin Gang the importance of resolving the eastern Ladakh border row and ensuring peace and tranquillity along the LAC for the development of bilateral ties.

The eastern Ladakh border standoff erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong Lake area.

The ties between the two countries nosedived significantly following the fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process in 2021 on the north and south banks of the Pangong Lake and in the Gogra area.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has condemned the manner in which the protesting Indian wrestlers were being treated by Delhi Police over the weekend, terming it "very disturbing" in a strongly-worded statement.

North Korea’s attempt to put its first spy satellite into space failed May 31  in a setback to leader Kim Jong Un’s push to boost his military capabilities as tensions with the United States and South Korea rise.

After an unusually quick admission of failure, North Korea vowed to conduct a second launch after it learns what went wrong. It suggests Kim remains determined to expand his weapons arsenal and apply more pressure on Washington and Seoul while diplomacy is stalled.

Elon Musk praised China's "vitality and promise" on May 31, Beijing said, during a trip to the Chinese capital in which he met multiple government officials and reportedly declared he will expand his business there.

The mercurial tycoon, one of the world's richest men, is on his first trip to China in more than three years.

He met commerce minister Wang Wentao, praising "the vitality and potential of China's development".

Musk "expressed full confidence in the China market, and was willing to continue deepening mutually beneficial cooperation", a readout of the meeting said.
