Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi was quick to make amends after an underwhelming performance in the snatch section as she clinched an overall silver in the women's 55kg competition at the Asian Championships.

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist had a total effort of 194kg (83kg+111kg), as she opened India's medal tally in this edition of the championship.

She also won the silver in the clean and jerk section.

However, the medals are in a non-Olympic weight category. The Manipuri had two failed lifts -- one each in snatch and clean jerk.

But a gold medal would have been out of her grasp even if she had completed those two lifts.

Chen Guan Ling of Chinese Taipei won the gold with a 204kg (90kg+114kg) effort while Vietnam's Vo Thi Quynh Nhu 192kg (88kg+104kg) bagged the bronze in a depleted field.

The WTA Tour says Amanda Anisimova plans to take an indefinite break from tennis, citing burnout and concerns for her mental health.

Anisimova, now 21, reached the 2019 French Open semifinals after beating reigning champion Simona Halep at age 17 — the youngest woman to get that far at a major since 2006.

But later that year, just prior to the U.S. Open, her father and longtime coach Konstantin died at age 52 from a heart attack.

Anisimova reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon a year ago, upsetting Coco Gauff. She twice reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and beat defending champion Naomi Osaka at the 2022 event in Melbourne.

Anisimova, a winner of two WTA singles titles, gave no timetable for her return. Currently ranked No. 46, she lost in the first round of the Madrid Open last week to Arantxa Rus and was 3-8 in match results for the season.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma's poor run of form in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 continued when he was dismissed for a three-ball duck by Deepak Chahar during his side's match against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 6 .

It is also Rohit's 16th duck in the IPL, the most for any batter in the history of the competition. He has surpassed Dinesh Karthik, Mandeep Singh and Sunil Narine, who are now joint second with 15 ducks each.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited as the guest of honour to attend this year’s Bastille Day Parade.

"On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership, PM Modi has accepted French President Emmanuel Macron’s invitation to attend this year’s Bastille Day Parade as Guest of Honour on 14 July in Paris," said a government communique.

To mark this important milestone, an Indian armed forces contingent will participate in the parade alongside their French counterparts. PM Modi’s visit is expected to herald the next phase in the India-France Strategic Partnership by setting new targets for strategic, cultural, scientific, academic and economic cooperation, including in a wide range of industries.

PM Modi and President Macron are slated to meet later this month in Hiroshima on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. President Macron is expected to attend the G20 Leaders Summit too in September this year in India.

Bastille Day is one of the most significant celebrations in France. Also known as the French National Day, it marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on July 14th 1789 – which was a major event of the French Revolution that celebrated the unity of the French people on 14th July 1790. The Bastille Day parade is said to be the oldest and largest military parade in Europe.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on May 5 said he was revoking his decision to quit as party chief.

Speaking at a press conference , Pawar, who had sprung a surprise by announcing his resignation three days ago, said he could not disrespect the sentiments of his colleagues and party workers who insisted that he withdraw his decision.

The NCP supremo's announcement came hours after the committee rejected his resignation and also appealed to him to continue in the same post, and conveyed it to.

Former Lok Sabha deputy speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party  in the presence of its president J P Nadda on  May 5 , in a boost to the party ahead of the Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-poll on May 10.

Atwal (86) resigned from the primary membership of the Akali Dal. He was also the Deputy Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha of India from 2004 to 2009.

His son Inder Iqbal had already joined the BJP. Supporting his son's wish, Charanjit Singh Atwal also bid farewell to the Akali Dal and joined the saffron party.

The Atwals belong to the Scheduled Caste community, which has a large presence in Punjab.

PM Narendra Modi will be attending the third in-person Quad Leaders’ summit, which is this time being hosted by Australia as its first on May 24 in Sydney.

PM's upcoming visit to Sydney in Australia on May 23 is likely to be held as one of the mega cultural extravaganzas with Indian Diasporas hosting mega reception. 

The Indian Australian Diaspora Foundation- which acts as a non-profit organisation promoting and celebrating diverse Indian culture in Australia is providing a platform for such reception -cum -cultural extravaganza.

PM Modi will be meeting with leaders of Japan, France, Australia and the US and other countries supposedly discussing the ways of stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prior to Australia's visit, PM Modi is also likely to visit Japan on May 20-21 as an invitation to attend the G-7 summit in Hiroshima.
