Gautam Singhania-run Raymond Group on Apr 27  announced the sale of its three consumer care brands -- the Kamasutra condoms and the grooming brands of Park Avenue perfumes and the KS deodorants -- to the Godrej group for Rs 2,825 crore.

The company's Chief Financial Officer Amit Agarwal said the deal is on a slump sale basis.

The company will continue to manufacture all these brands on a contract basis and sell them to Godrej Consumer Care from its Aurangabad plant.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president, PT Usha, has termed the decision of top wrestlers to protest on the streets disappointing and damaging to the image of the country. On Apr 27 , the IOA had its executive committee meeting at the IOA Bhawan in New Delhi and formed a three-member ad-hoc committee.

Wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat as well as coaches and other grapplers hit the streets last week protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. They said charges of sexual harassment levelled against him are grave and despite filing a police complaint, no FIR has been filed against Singh. They were forced to resume protest and take the matter to the Supreme Court.

Ten police personnel and a driver were killed in a blast carried out by Naxalites in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district on  Apr 26.

The incident took place under Aranpur police station limits when a team of the state police's District Reserve Guard (DRG) was returning after an anti-Naxalite operation.

The area is located around 450 km from the state capital Raipur.

Naxalites blew up the mini-goods van in which the security personnel were travelling by using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) .

A high-powered committee, constituted by the Tripura High Court, has recommended transfer of 23 elephants from Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura to animal rescue centre in Gujarat, run by Shri Radhe Krishna Temple, Elephant Welfare Trust

It also recommended that all states consider transferring captive elephants that are abandoned or required to be rescued from any situation of cruelty to this rescue centre. It also directed Chief Wild Life Wardens of Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh to take adequate and proper steps to ensure that no young elephants are captured from the wild.

The five-member panel was formed in the first week of November last year after a public interest litigation filed in the Tripura High Court seeking an inquiry into the past transfers and transportation of captive-bred elephants. It also sought a restrain on the transfer and transportation of these animals from North-East to the Elephant Welfare Trust.

The panel was chaired by Justice (retd) Deepak Verma. Director General of Forests, Head of Project, Elephant Division in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change,  Member Secretary, Central Zoo Authority of India, Chief Wild Life Warden of Tripura and Chief Wild Life Warden  of Gujarat were the members of the panel. 

The passing away of former Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali dal patriarch Parkash Singh Badal at 95 years of age marks the end of an era in state politics.

Punjab has lost a great reconciler who believed in building bridges as SAD’s architect. Born on december 8, 1927, Badal, who spent more than 75 years in public life, passed away at a private hospital in Mohali  at a private hospital.

Badal always batted for federalism. As an astute politician, Badal reigned over the state political landscape for seven decades as he forged an alliance with Jan Sangh and later with the BJP. The SAD-BJP alliance continued for years and broke in 2021 over the scrapped farm laws. He was the first person to support the Vajpayee-led ndA government in 1996.

Badal’s journey in politics started when he was 20 years old. He was elected as the youngest sarpanch of his native Badal village. An 11-time MlA, Badal remained CM for five times. He lost only two assembly elections after the bifurcation of Punjab in november 1966: in 1967 from the gidderbaha, where he was defeated by Harcharan Singh Brar of Congress and thereafter in last year’s assembly election, where he lost his lambi seat to first-timer gurmeet Singh Khudian of AAP.

As a politician, Badal weathered the emergency crackdown as well as the decade-long militancy in the 1980s. He became the youngest CM of the state in 1970 at the age of 42 years and remained in the chair for 14 months. Then in 2012, he became the oldest Chief Minister in the country at the age of 84 years. He has also held the record of becoming the CM of Punjab for five times from 1970-71, 1977-80, 1997-2002, 2007- 12, and 2012-17.

Besides, he remained a member of the lok Sabha once and served as the Union agriculture minister briefly.

He was conferred with Padma Vibhushan in 2015, which he returned in 2020 to protest against the scrapped farm laws. He was also honoured with Path rattan Faqr-eQaum (Jewel of the Panth Pride of the Community) in 2011 but various Sikh organisations kept demanding that Badal be stripped of this title.

The people who knew him closely said that he knew at least one person from every family in his constituency and called him by his name. Badal is survived by his son Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also the SAd president and is married to MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

Badal was born on December 8, 1927 in Abul Khurana, near Malout. He belonged to a Jat Sikh family. Badal graduated from the Forman Christian College in Lahore.

After the US managed to negotiate a 72-hour ceasefire in Sudan, many countries including India have spruced up their efforts to evacuate its citizens.

"The first batch of Indians evacuated from Sudan port have boarded INS Sumedha and are headed to Jeddah. There are 278 Indians on board this ship and there are close to 250 more who will be ferried to Jeddah," according to the Ministry of External Affairs. This exercise is called Operation Kaveri.

Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, has flown to Jeddah to oversee the evacuation process.

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who led her country through a devastating mass shooting, will be temporarily joining Harvard University later this year, Kennedy School Dean Douglas Elmendorf said.

Ardern, a global icon of the left and an inspiration to women around the world, has been appointed to dual fellowships at the Harvard Kennedy School. She will serve as the 2023 Angelopoulos Global Public Leaders Fellow and a Hauser Leader in the school's Center for Public Leadership beginning this fall.

Ardern, who was just 37 when she became prime minister in 2017, shocked New Zealanders when she announced in January she was stepping down from the role after more than 5 years because she no longer had "enough in the tank" to do it justice. She was facing mounting political pressures at home, including for her handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which was initially widely lauded but later criticized by those opposed to mandates and rules.

She said she sees the Harvard opportunity as a chance not only to share her experience with others, but also to learn.
