A multi-layer security ring has been thrown around Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, where Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh and nine of his aides are lodged.

The entire jail complex has been kept out of bounds of the general public. Several high-mast lights have been installed and there is round-the-clock CCTV surveillance.

The augmentation of security started ahead of the arrival of Amritpal’s nine aides – all of them NSA detainees. The police invoked NSA also against Amritpal. They are the only Sikh inmates of the Dibrugarh jail which is Assam’s second oldest prison built in 1857.

Amritpal Singh was arrested in Rode village of Punjab's Moga district after police personnel surrounded him, leaving him with no way to escape.

Jordan's Foreign Ministry on Apr 23 said a Jordanian lawmaker has been arrested by Israel on suspicion of smuggling weapons and gold into the occupied West Bank.

The ministry's spokesman, Sinan Majali, said Jordanian officials are following the case "to find out the merits of the situation and address it as soon as possible."

The lawmaker was identified as Imad Al-Adwan.

Israel's Foreign Ministry declined comment.

The incident threatens to further strain what already are tense relations between Jordan and its neighbour Israel.

The West Bank has seen a surge in violence over the past year.

Israel says the area has been flooded with illegal weapons, including guns smuggled from neighbouring Jordan.

Over 90 Palestinians and 18 Israelis have been killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this year.

Jordan controlled the West Bank and east Jerusalem before Israel captured the areas in the 1967 Mideast war, but the kingdom retains custodianship of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and other Muslim holy sites in the Old City.

The UK's main opposition Labour Party suspended prominent member Diane Abbott as an MP on Apr 23. She has been suspended for her comments that Jewish people were not subject to racism "all their lives".

Abbott, the first black woman to become an MP in the UK, said in a letter to the Observer newspaper that Irish, Jewish and Traveller people all "experience prejudice" similar to that suffered by "white people with points of difference, such as redheads. But they are not all their lives subject to racism".

Labour immediately announced that Abbott, who was shadow interior minister under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, had been suspended from its parliamentary party.

A former Walt Disney World employee is facing a charge that he surreptitiously took a video up the skirt of a female customer, allegedly telling investigators he had done it more than 500 times over the past six years.

Jorge Diaz Vega, 26, worked at the Star Wars gift shop inside Disney World’s Hollywood Studios theme park in Florida until his recent arrest on one count of video voyeurism, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

According to court records filed by Orange County Sheriff’s detectives, Vega was spotted by a witness shooting a video up an 18-year-old woman’s skirt. She later told security officers she was not aware of Vega’s actions.

He was arrested on March 31 and released on $2,500 bail. 

India has climbed six places on the World Bank's Logistic Performance Index (LPI) 2023, now ranking 38th in the 139 countries index, as a result of significant investments in both soft and hard infrastructure as well as technology.

India was ranked 44th on the index in 2018 and has now climbed to 38th in the 2023 listing. India's performance has drastically improved from 2014, when it was ranked 54th on the LPI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government announced the PM Gati Shakti initiative, a National Master Plan for multimodal connectivity, in October 2021 to reduce logistics costs and boost the economy by 2024-25.

In 2022, the prime minister launched the National Logistics Policy (NLP) to ensure quick last-mile delivery, end transport-related challenges, save time and money for the manufacturing sector and ensure desired speed in the logistics sector.

These policy interventions are fructifying, which can be seen in India's jump in LPI and its other parameters.

According to the report, India's rank moved up five places in infrastructure score from 52nd in 2018 to 47th in 2023. It climbed to the 22nd spot for international shipments in 2023 from 44th in 2018 and moved four places up to 48th in logistics competence and equality.

In timelines, India witnessed a 17-place jump in rankings, whereas it moved up three places in rank in tracking and tracing to 38th.

ICICI Bank, on Apr 22 , reported a 30% increase in standalone net profit at Rs 9,122 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2023 driven by growth in interest income and loan growth.The bank’s net interest income (the difference between interest earned and interest paid) grew 40% to Rs 17,667 crore from Rs 12605 crore in the corresponding period a year ago.

The net interest margin was 4.90% in the fourth quarter compared to 4% in the same quarter the previous year while non-interest income, excluding treasury income, increased by 11.3% year-on-year to Rs 5,127 crore in the fourth quarter from Rs 4,608 crore in same quarter of the previous year.Asset quality improved as net NPA ratio declined to 0.48% for the fourth quarter from 0.55% in the third quarter of FY23.  Gross NPA came down to 2.8% as compared to 3.1% in the previous quarter.

Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum smashed compatriot Eliud Kipchoge's course record to win the men's London Marathon in the second-fastest time ever.

The 23-year-old was just 16 seconds outside Kipchoge's world record, finishing in two hours one minute 25 seconds.

Sifan Hassan also produced a remarkable run to win the women's race. The Dutch Olympic track champion, 30, suffered with a hip injury but battled to win on her debut at the distance.

Kiptum knocked one minute and 12 seconds off Kipchoge's previous course record to beat second-placed compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor by almost three minutes.

Britain's Mo Farah was ninth in his final London Marathon, with the 40-year-old four-time Olympic champion revealing after the race that he would finish his career at the Great North Run in September.

Hassan, who won the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, appeared out of the women's race after dropping back early on with a hip problem, but somehow fought back.

She then produced a sprint finish to win in two hours 18 minutes 33 seconds.
