Senior BJP MLA and former education minister of Rajasthan Vasudev Devnani was elected as the new Speaker of the state assembly on December 21. 

The centre plans to set up 17,000 creches in Anganwadi centres, with a special focus on catering for women from the unorganised sector.

The Anganwadi-cum creches will help give care to children in the age group of six months to six years.

The establishment of the creches in anganwadis was also proposed in the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) but it did not take off.

According to  Indevar Pandey, Secretary at the Women and Child Development ministry, about 5,500 of them have already been approved by states and UTs

Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani has also sought cooperation from the states and UTs in the matter.

The government has decided to hand over the "comprehensive" security of the Parliament building complex to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in the wake of the recent breach of the safety ring.

The CISF is a central armed police force (CAPF) that currently guards many central government ministry buildings in Delhi apart from installations in the nuclear and aerospace domain, civil airports and the Delhi Metro.

In a major security breach on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack on December 13, two persons jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow smoke from canisters and shouted slogans before being overpowered by the MPs.

Around the same time, two others sprayed coloured smoke from canisters while shouting slogans outside the Parliament premises.

In a lethal blow to Tamil Nadu Minister for Higher Education K Ponmudi and the ruling DMK, the Madras High Court on Dec 21  sentenced him to three years of imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case.

Justice G Jayachandran pronounced the sentence under the Prevention of Corruption Act, in the jam packed court hall number 46 of the Madras High Court. His wife P Visalakhsi is sentenced to undergo imprisonment of same quantum of three years. Both of them have also been fined Rs 50 lakhs each. 

A day after former chief minister Dr Raman Singh was unanimously elected as the Speaker of Chhattisgarh assembly, the Madhya Pradesh assembly  on Dec 20 elected former Union minister and senior BJP leader Narendra Singh Tomar as its Speaker.

At least three jawans were killed and three more injured as terrorists ambushed two Army vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on  Dec 21 .

The vehicles came under attack in the Savni area on the Rajouri-Thanamandi-Surankote road around 3.30 PM.

They were carrying jawans from an area near Bufliaz where a cordon-and-search operation against terrorists has been underway since  Dec 20 night.
