The Centre will bring out 75 good quality law textbooks and content in regional languages this year to impart and encourage legal education in the mother tongue. Chamu Krishna Shastry, Chairman of the High Powered Committee for the Promotion of Indian Languages under the Ministry of Education, said, “Eminent professors will be writing these books in mother tongues for undergraduate courses.”

Law colleges and institutes can introduce these legal books from the next academic year. The decision to publish original law books in 13 regional languages was taken at the one-day national workshop on October 14, which the Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, or the high-powered committee,organised. This high-powered committee has been formed to recommend speedy pathways and action plans for the holistic and multidisciplinary development of Indian languages in the light of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The workshop was organised in collaboration with Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, an RSS-affiliated body on education.

Amid the rising number of lumpy skin diseases, Prabhu B Chavan, the Minister of Animal Husbandry in the Karnataka government  has assured the farmers and cattle owners that, the government is banning the animal slaughter and transport to combat the situation.

He informed that the respective district administrations have been instructed to ban cattle fairs, markets and transportation to prevent the further spread of the skin nodule disease. He also advised the livestock owners to follow precautionary measures such as boosting the immune system of the vaccinated livestock.

As per reports, lumpy skin disease is a viral disease that affects cattle. It is transmitted by blood-feeding insects, such as certain species of flies and mosquitoes, or ticks. It causes fever and nodules on the skin and can lead to the death of the cattle.

The virus has been found only in cows and buffaloes. There is no danger to humans in eating meat or using milk of animals that do not have the symptoms of Lumpy. Animals can be cured of Lumpy, however, the milk of such animals may get affected due by the virus.

The central government on  Oct 13 approved construction of an iconic cable stayed-cum-suspension bridge across Krishna river connecting Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and passing through the Nallamala forest range.

The decision was announced by union minister for road transport and national highways Nitin Gadkari.

Stating that once completed, the bridge across the Krishna river would be second of its kind in the world and first in India, he said.

Stating that after its completion, the three-km long bridge will reduce the distance between Hyderabad and Tirupati by 80 km, the union minister said the hybrid structural arrangement in the bridge would give a structural advantage to it and make it economical as well as aesthetically pleasing.

The two-storeyed cable bridge with four-lane carriageway across Krishna river was approved last week by the standing committee on finance for the union ministry of road transport and national highways.

It begins at Somasila at Kollapur in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district and Atmakur in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district.

At present, the people from Telangana are forced to travel for a long distance via Kurnool to reach pilgrim centres like Mahanandi, Ahobilam, Tirupati.

The only other option is to travel by boat across the river from Somasila to reach these places.

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court on Oct 14 acquitted Maoist sympathiser and former Delhi University professor Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba and his four accomplices from the charges of having links to the banned extremist organisation.

GN Saibaba, has been serving a life term in Nagpur central jail for alleged Maoist links since 2017.

While delivering the judgement, a division bench of the high court also ordered his immediate release from the jail.

The bench, comprising justices Rohit Deo and Anil Pansare, allowed the appeal filed by GN Saibaba challenging a 2017 order of the trial court convicting him and sentencing him to life imprisonment. The bench also allowed the appeal of five other convicts in the case and acquitted them. One of the five died pending hearing of the appeal. The bench directed for the convicts to be released forthwith from jail unless they are accused in any other case.

The Gadchiroli district sessions court convicted Saibaba and five others in 2017 for aiding and abetting Maoist activities and waging a war against the nation. He, along with Mahesh Tirki, Prashant Rahi, Hem Mishra and Pandu Narote, who died at the Nagpur central jail while undergoing treatment a couple of months ago, were awarded lifer under various sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) along with Section 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy.

The wheelchair bound English professor was arrested by the Maharashtra police in May, 2014 for his alleged links with the top leaders of the outlawed CPI (Maoist). He was terminated from his services by DU’s Ram Lal Anand College in August 2021.

Saibaba came under police scanner after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Hem Mishra, who was arrested in 2013 while he was on his way to Abujhmad in Chhattisgarh, allegedly told police during interrogation that he was acting as a courier between the professor and Maoist leaders, including the then secretary general of the organisation, Puppalla Laxman Rao alias Ganapathy.
