A court in military-ruled Myanmar convicted the country's ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on two more corruption charges on Oct 12, with two three-year sentences, to be served concurrently, added to previous convictions that now leave her with a 26-year total prison term.

Suu Kyi, 77, was detained on February 1, 2021, when the military seized power from her elected government.

Israel said  Oct 11 it has reached a US-brokered agreement with Lebanon to settle their long-disputed maritime border, hailing a "historic achievement" that potentially unlocks significant offshore gas production for both countries.

Negotiations between the neighbouring countries, which are still technically at war, had suffered repeated setbacks since their launch in 2020 but gained momentum in recent weeks with both sides eyeing revenue from potentially rich Mediterranean gas fields.

US envoy Amos Hochstein floated a proposed final agreement earlier this month that was accepted by Israel, but Lebanon sought some adjustments.

Israel said last week it intended to reject the changes sought by Lebanon, even if that made a deal impossible, but negotiations continued, culminating in what both sides described as acceptable final terms.

Lebanon's presidency said the proposed final text submitted by Hochstein was "satisfactory to Lebanon" and voiced hope that "the agreement on the demarcation will be announced as soon as possible".

Lebanon's chief negotiator, Elias Bou Saab, said that "today we have come to a solution that satisfies both parties."

A major source of friction at the talks was the Karish gas field, which Israel insisted fell entirely within its waters and was not a subject of negotiation.

Lebanon reportedly claimed part of the field and Hezbollah, the powerful Iran-backed militant group that holds huge sway in Lebanon, threatened attacks if Israel began production at Karish.

There was more bad news for the country's economy as retail inflation reached 7.41% in Sep compared to 7.01% in the previous month. This is the highest monthly inflation number since April 2022 when the CPI showed year-on-year growth of 7.79%.

The inflation in September was mainly driven by food and beverages (8.41%), fuel and light (10.39%) and clothing and footwear (10.17%).

Within food and beverages, cereals and vegetables continue to see high prices. While vegetables saw a 18% jump in prices during the month, cereal prices increased 12% year-on-year.

Rural areas recorded higher inflation with 7.56% y-o-y growth than urban areas that saw 7.27% inflation.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on  Oct 11 cut its projection of India's economic growth in 2022 to 6.8 per cent, as it joins other global agencies that have trimmed forecasts.

The IMF had in July projected a gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 7.4 per cent for India in the fiscal year that started in April 2022.

Even that forecast was lower than 8.2 per cent projected in January this year.

Former India all-rounder softspoken Roger Binny has padded up to take the reins of the Indian cricket board (BCCI) from former captain Sourav Ganguly. The 1983 World Cup-winning member from Bengaluru has filed his nomination for the post of BCCI president and is set to take charge after the election during BCCI’s Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on October 18.

Binny, who was the first Anglo- Indian to play cricket for India, is the only one to file a nomination for the post. He is currently the president of Karnataka State Cricket Association and will be the third former cricketer to hold the president’s post after Maharaja of Vizianagaram and Ganguly.

Jay Shah, son of Home Minister Amit Shah, will continue to occupy the powerful secretary’s post for one more term. Congressman Rajeev Shukla will hold on to his vice-president’s post. Shelar also happens to be an influential leader in the Maharashtra BJP circle.

Chief Justice of India UU Lalit on Oct 11 recommended to the Centre to appoint Justice DY Chandrachud, the senior-most judge after him as his successor and next CJI.

Initiating the process of appointment of the new CJI, Union Law Minister had written to Lalit requesting him to recommend his successor’s name.

Appointed as SC judge in 2016, Justice DY Chandrachud will take oath as the 50th CJI on November 9, 2022. Justice Chandrachud, son of the 16th and longest-serving Chief Justice of India, Justice YV Chandrachud will have a tenure of almost two years. 

Kashmiri separatist leader Altaf Ahmad Shah, the son-in-law of the late Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, died of cancer at the AIIMS New Delhi early on Oct 11 , days after he was taken to the hospital from the Tihar Jail on the orders of Delhi High Court. He was 66.

Shah, a resident of Soura locality of Srinagar, was arrested on July 25, 2017 with six others, facing trial in an alleged terror funding case probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
