The Punjab Police on  Sep 19 said it has formed a three-member all-women special investigation team to probe the allegations that objectionable videos of several women students of Chandigarh University had been recorded by a hosteller.

The SIT has been formed under the supervision of senior IPS officer Gurpreet Kaur Deo, police said. The team will thoroughly probe the case and no person involved will be spared, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said.

Protests had rocked the campus in Punjab's Mohali since Sep 17 night and they continued till early morning on Sep 19 .

Former chief minister and Punjab Lok Congress chief Amarinder Singh is likely to join the BJP in Delhi on Sep 19  along with his son and daughter and supporters in the presence of senior leaders of the ruling party.

Singh (80) will also merge his newly formed Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Singh had floated the PLC last year after quitting the Congress following his unceremonious exit as chief minister, but his party failed to win any seat in the state assembly polls. Singh himself lost from his home turf of Patiala Urban.

The PLC contested the elections in alliance with the BJP and the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).

The Opposition in Nagaland, the Rising People’s Party (RPP) accused BJP of using government machinery for party work in election-bound Nagaland.

The Health Department has written to all chief medical officers/medical superintendents in the state seeking medical assistance for the BJP’s Seva Pakhwada teams for the conduct of medical camps from September 19 to October 1, 2022.

The letter drew the attention of the opposition Rising People’s Party (RPP) which said "there is a limit to everything." The opposition has asked the government to revoke the order within three days or face agitation.

The opposition also said the BJP was free to organise a medical camp using its own resources by hiring doctors or approaching charitable bodies such as Lion’s Club and Rotary Club.

The BJP is a key component of the state’s ruling coalition.

Former Nagaland Chief Minister and United Democratic Alliance Chairman T R Zeliang claimed that the NSCN-IM has agreed to resume peace talks with the Centre to try to resolve irritants to the Naga peace talks.

Zeliang, who is also the co-chairman of the state government's core committee on the Naga political issue, said an NSCN-IM delegation is likely to leave for Delhi on Sep 19 .

Negotiations between the Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) have been stalled since May.

The union government has been holding two separate parleys with the NSCN(IM) since 1997 and the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) comprising seven organisations since 2017.

The Centre signed a framework agreement with the NSCN(IM) on August 3, 2015, and also entered into an agreed position with NNPGs in December 2017.

The framework agreement signed between the Centre and the NSCN-IM came after over 80 rounds of negotiations since a ceasefire pact was sealed in 1997 after decades of insurgency, which started in Nagaland soon after Independence in 1947.

However, the final solution is yet to see the light of the day.

Beijing on Sep 19 said President Joe Biden's latest comments that the United States would defend Taiwan against a Chinese invasion "severely violate" Washington's policy towards the island.

In an interview, Biden was asked whether US troops would defend Taiwan, and replied "yes", if it were "an unprecedented attack".

Washington cut formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979, switching recognition to Beijing as the sole representative of China. But at the same time, the United States maintained a decisive, if delicate, role in supporting Taiwan.

Tensions between China and the US are already higher than usual in the wake of a rare visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, a key Biden ally and speaker of the House of Representatives.

Last week, a US Senate committee took the first step towards directly providing billions of dollars in military aid to Taiwan and making ties more official.

A 28-year-old Indian student has succumbed to the injuries sustained during a shooting rampage in Canada's Ontario province that also claimed two other lives, including that of a police constable, police said.

Satwinder Singh, who was injured in the shooting on Sep 12 Milton, died at the Hamilton General Hospital with his family and friends by his side.

Singh was an international student from India who was working part-time at MK Auto Repairs at the time of the shooting.

The gunman was identified as 40-year-old Sean Petrie. He was later shot dead by police in Hamilton.
