This year's US Open will award a record USD 60.1 million in total player compensation, the US Tennis Association said , with USD 2.6 million going to each singles champion, twice the runner-up total.

The prize money total tops the old mark of USD 57.5 million from last year, with an emphasis on boosting payouts for players in early rounds.

That means a boost to USD 80,000 for each singles competitor in the main draw first round and USD 121,000 in the second round.

Those figures represent hikes of 85% and 57% respectively since 2016.

The USTA arrived at the figures after consultation with the WTA and ATP Player Councils.

There will be more than USD 6.25 million distributed in qualifying rounds.

Doubles champions will be paid USD 688,000 per team, twice what the runner-up duo will receive.

The titles of recently blocked Youtube channels --Loktantra TV, U&V TV, AM Razvi, Gouravshali Pawan Mithilanchal, SeeTop5TH, Sarkari Update, and Sab Kuch Dekho -- may appear innocuous but were working for nefarious purposes; spreading misinformation related to India’s national security, foreign relations and posing threat to public order in the country.

The ministry of information and broadcasting (I&B), utilising the emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021, issued orders to block them along with three other channels including a digital channel-- News ki Dunya—being operated from Pakistan. The order was issued on Aug 16. The action was taken after specific inputs from intelligence agencies.    

The Delhi High Court has ordered that an FIR be registered forthwith against BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain on a woman's complaint in 2018 alleging rape.

While noting that there was a complete reluctance on the part of the police to even register an FIR, Justice Asha Menon said there was no perversity in the 2018 trial order directing the registration of the FIR and vacated the interim orders of the court staying its operation.

A Delhi-based woman had moved the lower court seeking registration of an FIR against Hussain on her allegation of rape.

A magisterial court had on July 7, 2018, ordered the registration of an FIR against Hussain, saying a cognizable offence was made out in the complaint of the woman.

This was challenged by the BJP leader before a sessions court which dismissed his plea.

On July 13, 2018, the high court had passed an interim order staying the trial court order which directed the Delhi Police to register the FIR.

Hussain challenged the trial court order on grounds that in spite of the police stand that its inquiry revealed that the allegations raised by the complainant were not found to be substantiated, the lower court directed the registration of an FIR.

The prosecution said that in the light of the directions issued by the Supreme Court in the Lalita Kumari case, the FIR had to be registered and there was no infirmity in the order favouring its registration.

Assam will send 1,000 youth to the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands so that they can imbibe the spirit of nationalism, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

A bombing at a mosque in the Afghan capital of Kabul during evening prayers killed at least 21 people, including a prominent cleric, and wounded at least 33 others.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack  on Aug 17 night, the latest to strike the country in the year since the Taliban seized power.

The Islamic State group’s local affiliate has stepped up attacks targeting the Taliban and civilians since the former insurgents’ takeover last August as US and NATO troops were in the final stages of their withdrawal from the country. Last week, the extremists claimed responsibility for killing a prominent Taliban cleric at his religious centre in Kabul.

The slain cleric was Mullah Amir Mohammad Kabuli.

China said that its troops will take part in the Vostok-2022 military exercises in Russia to be held later this month, a drill which will also see the participation of the Indian military.

As per the annual cooperation plan between the Chinese and Russian militaries and the consensus of the two sides, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) will send some troops to Russia to participate in the military exercise in the near future.

India, Belarus, Tajikistan, Mongolia and other countries will also participate in the drills.

The US government plans talks with Taiwan on a wide-ranging trade treaty as a sign of support for the self-ruled island democracy claimed by China’s ruling Communist Party as part of its territory.

The announcement comes after Beijing held military drills that included firing missiles into the sea to intimidate Taiwan following this month's visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Taiwan and China split in 1949 after a civil war. The island never has been part of the People’s Republic of China, but the Communist Party says it is obliged to unite politically with the mainland, by force if necessary.

The United States has no official relations with Taiwan but maintains extensive ties through its unofficial embassy, the American Institute in Taiwan.
