The authorities in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district clamped Section 144 of the CrPC in the border town of Moreh after violence broke out on july 6 during a protest rally against the killings of two Tamils in Myanmar.

The protestors crossed over the porous international border and torched a vacant sentry post of Myanmar Army. They also pelted stones targetting the houses of Myanmar residents. The Myanmar police retaliated by pelting stones.

The Tamil Sangam, Moreh said the situation in the town was tense but under control.

P Mohan (28) and M Iyanar (35) were shot dead at Tamu, 4 km from Moreh, on july 5. Locals said the duo had gone to the Myanmar town to attend the birthday party of one of their friends.

“Myanmar-based militants, backed by the Myanmar Army, may have shot them dead,” Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had told.

Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant will be the new Sherpa of G-20, replacing Union Minister Piyush Goyal as full-time sherpa required for India's presidency.

India assumes the G-20 presidency later this year.

It will hold the presidency of the G-20 from December 1 to November 30, 2023.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is going to hold a review meeting with the heads of public sector lenders to discuss various issues and to review the progress of various government schemes related to agriculture and allied sectors.

The meeting is expected to review governance reforms in Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).

RRBs, which play an important role in agriculture credit, is sponsored by Public Sector Banks (PSBs).

Currently, the Centre holds 50 per cent in RRBs, while 35 per cent and 15 per cent are with the concerned sponsor banks and state governments, respectively.

Of the 43 RRBs, about one-third RRBs, especially from north-eastern and eastern regions, are in losses and they need funds to meet regulatory capital requirements of 9 per cent.

These banks were formed under the RRB Act, 1976 with an objective to provide credit and other facilities to small farmers, agricultural labourers and artisans in rural areas.

The Act was amended in 2015, whereby such banks were permitted to raise capital from sources other than the Centre, states and sponsor banks.

Currently, the Centre holds 50 per cent in RRBs, while 35 per cent and 15 per cent are with the concerned sponsor banks and state governments, respectively.

Last month, the Finance Ministry had a full-day meeting with CEOs of public sector banks.

Bankers were urged to sanction loans for productive sectors to accelerate the revival of the economy facing headwinds including from the Russia-Ukraine war.
