Dixon Technologies, country’s largest electronic manufacturing company, on Dec  unveiled a new unit in Noida to produce smartphones from Xiaomi. Built with an investment of `256 crore, the new facility will have an annual capacity of 25 million units. 

Dixon is a contract manufacturer, and produces consumer durables, lighting and mobile phones and others for companies like Samsung, Phillips, Xiaomi and Godrej. It is among the first companies that received the incentive of electronic manufacturing. Dixon exported smartphones worth Rs 1,200 crore smartphones in the last fiscal. This time, the company aims to double down its exports.

Currently, the global electronic manufacturing market is about $900 billion. India’s contribution is just 2.3% or about $20 billion.

PLI scheme for smartphone created 5L jobs: Vaishnaw

The production linked incentive scheme for the mobile sector has created 5 lakh incremental job opportunities in the country, said telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The minister, after visiting the Dixon Technologies’ new mobile manufacturing plant, also said that the country is encouraging all smartphone companies in India to export.  

Chandigarh’s Ranveer Duggal added the junior boys’ snooker title to the junior billiards crown that he won last week in the 90th National Billiards and Snooker Championships held at the Nehru Indoor Stadium. Duggal beat Mayur Garg of Gujarat 4-1 in the final.

In what was a long overdue appointment, the BCCI named former cricketer and coach Amol Muzumdar as the head coach of the Indian senior women’s team.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side has been without a head coach since Ramesh Powar was reshuffled to NCA last december. Since then, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Nooshin Al Khadeer acted as head coaches on different occasions, with the former heading the team during Asian Games.

Muzumdar’s appointment comes at a time when India are looking to build a strong team for next year’s T20 World Cup and the home ODI World Cup in 2025.

Sixteen days after they were trapped in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi, all the 41 workers finally emerged to see the light of day.

The rescued men were draped in orange marigold flower garlands in celebration as they were greeted by state officials, government photographs showed, with a line of ambulances waiting to receive them.

Crowds cheered as emergency vehicles with lights flashing readied to leave the tunnel entrance, where the workers had been trapped since a portion of the under-construction tunnel in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand collapsed on November 12.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew a sortie on indigenously designed and developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas in Bengaluru on Nov 26 . Modi took to the skies from the HAL airport. He is the first Indian prime minister to fly a fighter aircraft sortie.

During the 30-minute sortie on the twin-seater aircraft, Modi looked cheerful and was seen waving at the pilot of an aircraft that was flying along. The PM congratulated the Indian Air Force, DRDO, and HAL for the LCA’s success.

The IAF stated that the PM undertook a 30-minute sortie on Tejas twin-seater aircraft from the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment in Bengaluru. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari felicitated Modi after the sortie.

Modi visited HAL’s Bengaluru complex and reviewed the progress achieved in the production of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas.

A statement from HAL said the PM visited the production line of LCA Tejas and interacted with the engineers there. The engineers briefed him that the aircraft is now powered by GE 404 engine which will be upgraded to GE 414 engine for LCA Mk II manufactured in India with 80% transfer of technology from GE Engines.

The PM was briefed about the capacity investments being done by HAL to scale up production of LCA Tejas aircraft. HAL has established two production lines of LCA Tejas in Bengaluru, which can produce up to 16 aircraft a year. An additional production line is being established at HAL, Nasik, to scale up LCA production beyond 24 from 2024-25 onwards. The engineers also explained about the progress made on the LCA MK1A programme.
