India concluded their campaign with one gold and two silver medals -- two of them coming in the compound section.

The women's recurve team, who bagged a lowly 13th seed after the trio slipped out of the top-30 in their individual qualification rounds, failed to make much of an impact and lost to Chinese Taipei 5-1 (53-56 56-56 53-56) in straight sets.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on  june 22 indicated that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray could recommend to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to dissolve the state Assembly, as the crisis for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government deepened.

Shiv Sena's dissident leader Eknath Shinde  has asserted that 40 MLAs from Maharashtra have accompanied him to Guwahati in Assam.

The Shiv Sena legislators have rebelled against the party, plunging the tripartite MVA government, comprising the Sena, NCP and Congress, into a crisis.

Earlier, the MLAs were taken to Surat in Gujarat from Mumbai on  june 21 , and the decision to shift them to Guwahati was taken on security grounds.

As the Central government is yet to announce the official date of commencement of the Agnipath scheme, Indian Army chief General Manoj Pande on June 17 said that the training of first Agniveers will begin in December 2022 and the active service will commence in the middle of 2023.

Notably, COVID-19 halted the Army's recruitment for over two years. In 2019-2020, the Army recruited jawans and there has been no entry since then. On the other hand, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force had both recruited in the last two years respectively.

Violent protest over the Central government's 'Agnipath' scheme for recruitment in armed forces continued across Bihar with hundreds of aspirants disrupting rail and road traffic while police fired tear gas shells to disperse them.

Violent protests broke out in nine states against the Centre’s Agnipath short-term recruitment scheme for the armed forces, putting the government on the backfoot. With the Opposition, too, stepping up the heat, the government responded by empowering Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to make changes to the scheme as required at his level without seeking the Cabinet’s concurrence.

Protesters set trains on fire and disrupted rail and road traffic, smashed window panes of buses and pelted stones in Bihar, Haryana, UP, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu. There were protests at Delhi’s Nangloi railway station as aspirants stopped trains and demanded a rollback of the new policy. At least 34 trains were cancelled and eight others were partially cancelled due to the protests.

Besides 72 trains were running late due to the agitation. Bihar was the worst affected with protesters resorting to arson at several places in as many as 11 districts, including Chhapra, Ara, Siwan, Gopalganj, Ara, Jehanabad, Saharsa and Nawada. National highways were blocked in Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Buxar, Arwal and East Champaran districts. In Saran and Kaimur, train bogies and an engine were torched.

The government introduced a one-time waiver later in the day to increase the age cap to 23 years from 21 years for recruitment under the Agnipath scheme this year since there was no hiring during the last two years

Of 57 newly elected Rajya Sabha members, 23 (almost 40 per cent) have declared criminal cases against them in their poll affidavits with nine of these MPs coming from the BJP and four Congress, according to a report released by ADR-National Election Watch.

Six of these Rajya Sabha MPs have been elected from Uttar Pradesh, four each from Maharashtra and Bihar, three from Tamil Nadu, two from Telangana and one each from Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Haryana.

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch said the report was based on the analysis of self-sworn affidavits of all 57 MPs who were elected to Rajya Sabha this month.

According to a party-wise break-up given by the report, nine out of 22 newly elected Rajya Sabha MPs of the BJP have criminal cases against them.

Out of nine newly elected MPs of Congress, four have declared criminal cases against them in their poll affidavits.

The report said both of the newly elected TRS MPs as well as two members elected to Rajya Sabha from RJD have declared criminal cases against them "One MP each from YSRCP, DMK, AIADMK, SP, SHS (Shiv Sena) and an Independent have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits

China launches high-tech 'Type 003' aircraft carrier in naval milestone

Beijing launched a new-generation aircraft carrier, the first such ship to be both designed and built in China, in a milestone as it seeks to extend the range and power of its navy.

The Type 003 carrier christened Fujian left its drydock at a shipyard outside Shanghai in the morning and tied up at a nearby pier

Equipped with the latest weaponry and aircraft-launch technology, the Type 003 ship’s capabilities are thought to rival those of Western carriers, as Beijing seeks to turn its navy, already the world’s largest, into a multi-carrier force.

China's new carrier was named after the Fujian province on the country's southeastern coast, following a tradition after naming its first two carriers after the provinces of Liaoning and Shandong.
