The Arunachal Pradesh government’s “Air Gun Surrender Abhiyan” is reaping rich dividends.

A Mandarin duck was sighted in the state’s Ziro on March 12 at the Siikhe Lake. This was the second appearance of the species in the Ziro Valley. The bird was sighted for the first time in the state on February 20 last year.

Hunting is traditional among certain communities in Arunachal. Earlier, the state government had launched a campaign, urging people to surrender air guns and other firearms used for hunting. Subsequently, a lot of people surrendered these.

The bird was sighted by one Koj Mama, a resident of Ziro and a member of Ngunu Ziro, which is a local conservation based-NGO. This species was sighted last year in Assam at Maguri Motapung wetland after a gap of 108 years.

The Mandarin duck is a migratory avian species native to East Asia and has been sighted in the Northeast on rare occasions. Previous recorded sighting of the species are from the Loktak Lake in Manipur in 2013 and Manas National Park in Assam in 2014.

The Siikhe Lake was subsequently visited by the officials of the Forest Department and a detailed survey of all the migratory birds present there was conducted. Other important species like the Common Teal, Eurasian Widgeon and Falcated Duck are also among the birds that have been spotted at the lake.

The state had enacted the landmark ‘Pakke Declaration’ last October which was aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and preserving the rare and endangered species of flora and fauna.

The Ziro Valley is one of the most beautiful high altitude valleys of the state. The state government in its recent budget announcements declared that it would build a butterfly park at Ziro for the preservation of the valley’s biodiversity.

President Joe Biden said that the US is sending more anti-aircraft, anti-armor weapons, and drones to Ukraine to assist in its defense against Russia.

The president's comments came as he formally announced his administration was sending an additional USD 800 million in military assistance to Ukraine, making a total of USD 2 billion in such aid sent to Kyiv since Biden took office more than a year ago.

About USD 1 billion in aid has been sent in just the last week.

Biden spoke hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a video address to members of US Congress in which he made an impassioned plea for the US and West to provide more help to save his young democracy than world leaders have so far pledged to provide.

Livestreamed into the Capitol complex, Zelenskyy said the US must sanction Russian lawmakers and block imports.

But rather than an enforced no-fly zone that the White House has resisted, he instead sought other military aid to stop the Russian assault.

For the first time in a public address to world leaders, he showed a packed auditorium of lawmakers a graphic video of the destruction and devastation his country has suffered in the war, along with heartbreaking scenes of civilian casualties.

Lawmakers gave him a standing ovation, before and after his short remarks, which Zelenskyy began in Ukrainian through an interpreter but then switched to English in a heartfelt appeal to help end the bloodshed.

Nearing the three-week mark in an ever-escalating war, Zelenskyy has used the global stage to implore allied leaders to help stop the Russian invasion of his country.

The young actor-turned-president often draws from history, giving weight to what have become powerful appearances.
