Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella has invested in investment platform Groww. He will also act as its advisor.

The fintech unicorn’s co-founder and CEO Lalit Keshre tweeted the announcement on Jan 8 saying, “Groww gets one of the world’s best CEOs as an investor and advisor.

Established in 2016, founded by four ex-Flipsters Lalit Keshre, Harsh Jain, Neeraj Singh, and Ishan Bansal, Groww in April 2021 entered the unicorn club by raising $83 million funding from Tiger Global.

The Election Commission of India has annulled the appointment of actor Sonu Sood as Punjab's “state icon”.

Sonu Sood had been made Punjab's “icon” over a year ago by the Election Commission of India.

Actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood had said last November that his sister Malvika is joining politics but he has no such plans for himself.

Belonging to the Moga district in Punjab, Sood had catapulted to the national spotlight for helping migrant workers reach their homes during the Covid lockdown last year.

Top-ranked Ash Barty has won her second Adelaide International title in three years with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Elena Rybakina.

The win improved Barty’s record against top-20 rivals to 17-1 since the beginning of 2021.

Barty also beat Coco Gauff, 2020 Australian Open champion Sofin Kenin and 2020 French Open winner Iga Swiatek en route to her 14th WTA tournament win.

VK Bhawara appointed as new Punjab DGP ahead of Assembly polls, third in three months

Punjab has a new Director General of Police, the state's third in three months. 1987-batch IPS officer Viresh Kumar Bhawra was appointed the head of state police hours before the date of assembly elections were announced on Jan 8 .

Among the other two was former DGP Dinkar Gupta, who was also from the 1987 batch. Gupta had served as Punjab DGP when Captain Amarinder Singh was the Chief Minister, but he was removed when Charanjit Singh Channi became the CM and had proceeded on leave before being posted as Chairman of Punjab Police Housing Corporation.

1988-batch IPS officer Prabodh Kumar, who is posted as Special DGP (Investigation) Lokpal and had sought central deputation, was the third candidate. He had headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was probing the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan incidents.

The UPSC has not cleared the name of the officiating Punjab DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, a 1986 batch IPS officer appointed by the state government on December 16.

The new DGP's wife Anjali Bhawara is an IAS officer also from the Punjab cadre and she is presently posted as secretary of the department of empowerment of persons with disabilities (Divyangyan) in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Former Kazakhstan intelligence and anti-terror agency chief arrested over anti-incumbency protests

The former head of Kazakhstan's counterintelligence and anti-terror agency has been arrested on charges of attempted government overthrow in the wake of violent protests that the president has blamed on foreign-backed terrorists.

The arrest of Karim Masimov was announced by the National Security Committee, which Kasimov headed until he was removed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Authorities said that the security forces killed 26 demonstrators in unrest and that 18 law-enforcement officers died.More than 4,400 people have been arrested

The protests in the Central Asian nation were the most widespread since Kazakhstan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

The unrest began in the country's far west as protests against a sharp rise in prices for liquefied petroleum gas that is widely used as vehicle fuel, and spread to the country's largest city, Almaty, where demonstrators seized and burned government buildings.

At Tokayev's request, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, a Russia-led military alliance of six former Soviet states, authorised sending about 2,500 mostly Russian troops to Kazakhstan as peacekeepers.

Many demonstrators were shouting "old man out", a reference to Nursultan Nazarbayev, who was president from independence until resigning in 2019 and anointing Tokayev as his successor.

Nazarbayev, who was given the title Ebasy (leader of the nation), retained substantial power after resignation as head of the National Security Council. But Tokayev removed him as council head amid the unrest, possibly aiming at a concession to mollify protesters.

BJP sweeps Chandigarh mayoral polls, Sarabjit Kaur is new mayor; AAP cries foul

The BJP on Jan 8 swept the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation mayoral polls and its municipal councillor Sarabjit Kaur became the new mayor.

The saffron party also bagged the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor of the Chandigarh MC.

The mayor's post was reserved for a woman candidate this year. However, the AAP called the poll results a "murder of democracy".

BJP's Sarabjit Kaur defeated Aam Aadmi Party's Anju Katyal by one vote in a direct contest.

Out of the total 36 votes, 28 were polled, while seven Congress councillors and the lone Shiromani Akali Dal councillor abstained.

BJP's Dalip Sharma became the senior deputy mayor after he trounced AAP's Prem Lata by a margin of two votes.
