Harmanpreet exhibited his prowess by converting two penalty corners in the 15th and 23rd minutes, a testament to his precision and skill. The Rajya Sabha on Aug 9  passed the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2023 with a voice vote following a walkout by the opposition members over the Manipur issue.

The Lok Sabha passed the bill on Aug 7.

The bill which comes after six years of the Supreme Court declaring "Right to Privacy" as a fundamental right has provisions to curb the misuse of individuals' data by online platforms.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the bill lays down obligations on private and government entities around the collection and processing of citizen's data.

The bill seeks to protect the privacy of Indian citizens while proposing a penalty of up to Rs 250 crore on entities for misusing or failing to protect the digital data of individuals.

Kolkata is set to host the third and final two-day meeting of the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) under India’s presidency from Aug 9 .

Over 154 delegates from G20 member countries, 10 invitee countries, and various international organisations will attend the meeting. This will be followed by the G20 Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meeting on August 12, 2023, which will be chaired by Dr Jitendra Singh,  who is the Minister of State for the Ministry of Science and Technology, Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office; for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and for the Department of Atomic Energy and the Department of Space.

This will be the second-ever ministerial meeting of the G20 ACWG and the first in-person ACWG ministerial meeting. The deliberations at the ministerial level will impart a further political impetus to fighting corruption as ACWG plays a crucial role in leading international efforts to combat the same. Under India’s G20 presidency, ACWG has been able to achieve significant progress on anti-corruption cooperation with respect to action against fugitive economic offenders and subsequent return of assets, guided by the nine-point agenda for Action Against Fugitive Economic Offences and Asset Recovery presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to G20 member countries in 2018.

Renowned Malayalam filmmaker, scriptwriter, and producer Siddique, who is known for several hit comedy films in the 1990s and early 2000s, passed away in Kochi.

Thousands of Nagas of Manipur on Aug 9  took out rallies in areas inhabited by them to press for the successful conclusion of peace talks between the Centre and Naga groups based on the Framework Agreement.

The protesters also demanded that separate administration for any other community must not infringe upon Naga-inhabited areas.

Rallies were brought out in the district headquarters of Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and Chandel amid tight security.

The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex civic body of Naga tribes in Manipur, called for the rallies in the Naga-inhabited areas.

The hill areas of Manipur constitute 90 per cent of the geographical area of the state and are inhabited by two Naga and Kuki-Zo tribes.

Naga Hoho, a powerful civic body of the Naga tribes, has asked the 10 Naga MLAs in Manipur not to attend the proposed assembly session from August 21, claiming that the Manipur government has been working against peace talks with Naga groups.

There are 10 Kuki-Zomi MLAs, including seven from the BJP, two from the Kuki People's Alliance and one independent, in the Manipur House which has a strength of 60 members.

The Uttarakhand government, which is determined to improve health services for pilgrims and other tourists visiting Char Dham, has come up with a lucrative package for doctors who often refuse to serve in hilly and inaccessible areas of the state.

The Pushkar Singh Dhami-led government has coined a ‘you quote, we pay’ plan for such doctors. It believes that if the plan is successful, then not only would the shortage of doctors be met, but patients in remote areas will also get quality health facilities.

In a bid to overcome the shortage of cardiologists in Uttarakhand, the state government has decided to give an honorarium of Rs 6 lakh per month to super specialist doctors under this proposed scheme. The Central government has approved a higher package for the cardiologist super specialist doctors on contract under the National Health Mission.

The World Bank said it will not consider new loans to Uganda after the East African country earlier this year enacted an anti-gay bill that rights groups and others have condemned.

The World Bank deployed a team to Uganda after the law was enacted in May and determined that additional measures were necessary to ensure projects aligned with the bank's environmental and social standards.

The anti-gay legislation, which prescribes the death penalty for some homosexual acts, was signed into law in May. It has widespread support at home, and Ugan

India-born college student will be first Republican to challenge Democrat Baldwin for Senate in 2024

Rejani Raveendran, a 40-year-old India-born college student has announced her bid for Senate in the US state of Wisconsin, becoming the first Republican to officially contest against Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin.

Raveendran, chair of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College Republicans, on Tuesday officially launched her run against 61-year-old Baldwin in Portage County.

Raveendran's longshot entry would indeed add a new face to the race. The mother of three has not been involved in politics until recently.

She joined the Stevens Point College Republicans this year, she said, and only decided to run for Senate after her trip to Washington earlier this summer.
