Having suffered their second defeat in the ongoing 2023 Women's T20 World Cup late on Feb 14 , Bangladesh have now been rocked by an alleged spot-fixing approach off the field.

30-year-old Lata Mondal, who scored a 13-ball 11 against Sri Lanka in their opening game of the tournament, has been allegedly approached by Shohley Akhter, a senior cricketer, who is not with the team in South Africa offering a spot-fixing proposal.

The audio recording of the conversations between the two cricketers was aired on Bangladesh channel Jamuna TV, in which, Lata was reportedly offered money to do spot-fixing during the global event.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has released 119 ‘conditional’ air routes for commercial flight operations, which will bring down consumption of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), and travelling time and cut carbon emissions. The availability of airspace for civilian use will lead to a potential savings of Rs 1,000 crore per annum for airlines.

Briefing about the decision, Union Tourism and Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy on Feb 13 said that the matter had been debated over the years but due to indecision civilian flights had to detour. A conditional route (CDR) is a route or a portion, which can be planned or used under certain specified conditions only. Around 40 per cent of the airspace was unavailable for civilian use till now forcing the airlines to adopt circuitous routes, leading to inefficient use of fuel and time along with avoidable extra expenditure.

He added under regional connectivity scheme (RCS) Udan, the government so far has spent Rs 2,360 crore as viability gap funding to compensate the losses of the airlines operating on non-profitable routes.

Clearing the decks for elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Supreme Court on Feb 13 found nothing illegal in the Delimitation Commission redrawing poll constituencies and increasing the Assembly seats from 107 to 114, including 24 seats in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

A bench of Justices S K Kaul and A S Oka declared the notifications issued in 2020 by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for constituting the Delimitation Commission for J&K valid. Justice Oka, who authored the 54-page ruling, clarified that the judgment will have no bearing on the issue of validity of the Delimitation Act and the Article 370 petitions pending before another bench of the Supreme Court.

The bench said its findings are on the footing that the exercise of power made in 2019 under clauses (1) and (3) of Article 370 of the Constitution is valid. 

There are over 10 lakh government schools in India, but only 2 lahks have internet facilities, Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar informed the Lok Sabha on Feb 13 . Delhi is the only state where all the 2,762 government schools have internet facilities. In Puducherry (422) and Chandigarh (123) too, all the government schools are equipped with internet connectivity, Sarkar said in a written reply.

Closely followed by Lakshadweep, where 37 of the 38 schools, have an internet connection, as per the Unified District Information System for Education, a database developed by the education ministry. Among the states, in Kerala, 4,738 out of 5,010 government schools have internet. But the other southern states fare low on the list.

Of the 49,679 government schools in Karnataka, only 5,308 schools have internet facilities. In Tamil Nadu, 9,292 government schools out of 37,636, and in Andhra Pradesh, 20,313 out of 45,137 schools are similarly equipped.

Among the states faring poorly are Uttar Pradesh (12,074 out of 137,024 schools), Madhya Pradesh (16,469 out of 92,695 schools) and Bihar (4,421 out of 75,558 schools). An advisory has been issued by the department of school education and literacy to all the states and UTs to sign an agreement with BSNL and provide FTTH Internet connection to all the government schools, Sarkar said.

Sri Lanka on Feb 13  dismissed as a "joke" a top Tamil nationalist leader's claim that LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran, who was killed in 2009 by the island nation's military, was still alive.

Pazha Nedumaran, a noted nationalist leader in Tamil Nadu, told reporters in Thanjavur that the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) "is doing well" and a "conducive atmosphere prevails for him to appear now."

Sri Lanka's defence ministry dismissed Nedumaran's claim as a joke.

India and Nepal agreed on Feb 13  to further bolster their economic and development cooperation as Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra met his Nepalese counterpart Bharat Raj Paudyal and had a fruitful exchange on strengthening the comprehensive bilateral relations.

Foreign Secretary Kwatra arrived in Kathmandu  on a two-day official visit to hold talks with the country's top political leadership on the entire range of multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.

Saudi Arabia will send its first ever woman astronaut on a space mission later this year, state media has reported, in the latest move to revamp the kingdom's ultra-conservative image.

Rayyana Barnawi will join fellow Saudi male astronaut Ali Al-Qarni on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) "during the second quarter of 2023", the official Saudi Press Agency said.

The oil-rich country will be following in the footsteps of the neighbouring United Arab Emirates which in 2019 became the first Arab country to send one of its citizens into space.

At the time, astronaut Hazzaa al-Mansoori spent eight days on the ISS. Another fellow Emirati, Sultan al-Neyadi, will also make a voyage later this month.

Nicknamed the "Sultan of Space", 41-year-old Neyadi will become the first Arab astronaut to spend six months in space when he blasts off for the ISS aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

In 1985, Saudi royal Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, an airforce pilot, took part in a US-organised space mission, becoming the first Arab Muslim to travel into space.

In 2018, Saudi Arabia set up a space programme and last year launched another to send astronauts into space, all part of Prince Salman's Vision 2030 agenda for economic diversification.
