A total of 3,552 foreign companies and subsidiaries of foreign companies have been closed in the country between 2017 and 2022, the government informed parliament recently.

Responding to a query from a member, minister of state in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs Rao Inderjit Singh recently said in the Rajya Sabha that the reasons for closure of foreign companies in India vary from company to company.

According to him, there are 14,137 active foreign subsidiaries operating in the country. The minister was responding to the query raised by a member on closure of operations by foreign automobile companies in India.

So far, four foreign auto companies – Harley Davidson, General Motors, Ford and UM Motorcycles – have shut their operations in India. When asked if 64,000 jobs have been lost in India because of foreign automobile companies shutting operations in India and around R2,500 crore investments were lost due to exit of foreign auto companies, the minister said that the government has no such data with it.

State-owned Oil India Ltd (OIL) reported its highest-ever quarterly net profit in the third quarter that ended December 31 on the back of a rise in oil and natural gas prices.

Net profit of Rs 1,746.10 crore, or Rs 16.10 per share, in October-December, compared with Rs 1,244.90 crore, or Rs 11.48 a share, in the same period a year back, the company said in a statement.

OIL earned USD 88.33 for every barrel of crude oil it produced and sold in the third quarter of the current fiscal, up from USD 78.59 a barrel realisation in the year-ago period. Crude oil is refined at refineries to produce fuels such as petrol and diesel.

Private sector City Union Bank has reported 10% increase in net profit at Rs 217.83 crore for the October-December 2022 quarter, the Tamil Nadu-based bank said . The Tamil Nadu-based bank’s net profit was at Rs 196.11 crore in the corresponding period of last year.

A US fighter jet shot down an “unidentified object” over Lake Huron on Feb 12 on orders from President Joe Biden, believed to be the same one tracked over Montana and monitored by the government beginning the night before, the Pentagon said.

It was the fourth object shot out of the sky by U.S. fighter jets in eight days, along with ones over Alaska and Canada and a suspected Chinese spy balloon.

U.S. authorities have made clear that they constantly monitor for unknown radar blips, and it is not unusual to shut down airspace as a precaution to evaluate them.
