Facing a relentless attack from BJP over Chhapra hooch tragedy and alleged rising crime graph, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar will embark on Samadhan Yatra from Valmikinagar in West Champaran district from Jan 5. Nitish will primarily review implementation of various government schemes including his pet Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali drive during his Samadhan (solution) Yatra. He will be visiting various districts during his first phase of Yatra which will conclude on January 29.

Nitish Yatra is taking place against the backdrop of poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s ongoing ‘Jan Suraj Yatra’.

In a bid to upgrade Prasar Bharati's broadcast infrastructure and network, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Jan 5  approved a scheme worth more than Rs 2,500 crore for Doordarshan and All India Radio.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced the Central Sector 'Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND)' scheme with an outlay of Rs 2,539.61 crore up to 2025-26, which was approved by the CCEA.

The BIND scheme will enable the public broadcaster to undertake a major upgradation of its facilities with better infrastructure which will widen its reach, including in the LWE (Left Wing Extremism), border and strategic areas and provide high-quality content to the viewers.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed the Supreme Court order on Urban Local Body polls in the state saying his government will hold the elections within the time limit given by the apex court.

Adityanath also reiterated the state government's commitment to implementing the OBC reservation

in Urban Local Bodies on the basis of the report of the OBC commission set up by it till March 31.

The UP government had challenged the Allahabad High Court order blocking the OBC quota in civic polls and asking the state Election Commission to hold the polls before January 31.

Critics say the plan will undermine the country's democracy by giving absolute power to the most right-wing coalition in Israeli history.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin presented a series of sweeping changes aimed at curbing the powers of the judiciary, including by allowing lawmakers to pass laws that the high court has struck down and effectively deemed unconstitutional.

Levin laid out a law that would empower the country's 120-seat parliament, or Knesset, to override Supreme Court decisions with a simple majority of 61 votes. Levin also proposed that politicians play a greater role in the appointment of Supreme Court judges.

European Union regulators on Jan 5 hit Facebook parent Meta with hundreds of millions in fines for privacy violations and banned the company from forcing users in the 27-nation bloc to agree to personalized ads based on their online activity.

Ireland's Data Protection Commission imposed two fines totalling 390 million euros ($414 million) in its decision in two cases that could shake up Meta's business model of targeting users with ads based on what they do online. The company says it will appeal.

Veteran actor Satish Shah has said that he was subjected to racist remarks by a staff member at London's Heathrow airport.

The "Sarabhai vs Sarabhai" star  has said the airport staff asked his colleague in a baffled tone about how Shah was able to afford first-class travel.

The tweet on the actor's unverified handle went viral on social media and got over 12,000 likes and 1,300 retweets.

London Heathrow, one of the busiest international airports, apologised to Shah on Twitter and asked him to share details about the incident.
