Eastern Army Commander Lt General R P Kalita on  Nov 1 said that more and more areas still covered by AFSPA will be denotified as and when violence parameters come down to an acceptable level in those places.

Kalita, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, said that there has been considerable drop in violence in the last nine months in the insurgency-affected areas of the north-east leading to denotification of Armed Forces (Special Power) Act (AFSPA) from certain areas.

He said that peace and development have been ushering in these places.

The AFSPA was withdrawn from several places in Nagaland, Assam and Manipur from April 1 this year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on  Nov 1 paid tributes to the tribals who were massacred by the British army in 1913 in Mangarh in Rajasthan.

Modi, who will address a gathering of Bhil adivasis and members of other tribes at the Mangarh Dham in Banswara district, has also declared the memorial a national monument.

At the event, the prime minister shared the dais with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat chief ministers Ashok Gehlot, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Bhupendra Patel.

The dham, a memorial for around 1,500 tribals massacred by the British army in 1913, is located in the district on the Gujarat-Rajasthan border, a region with a large tribal population.

The gathering of tribals and forest dwellers in 1913 in Mangarh against the British Raj was being led by social reformer Govind Guru.

Jamshed J Irani, known as the steel man of India, died in Jamshedpur  on Oct 31 night, Tata Steel said. He was 86.

Irani retired from the board of Tata Steel in June 2011, leaving behind a legacy of 43 years, which won him and the company international acclaim in various fields.

Born on June 2, 1936 in Nagpur to Jiji Irani and Khorshed Irani, Dr Irani completed his BSc from Science College, Nagpur in 1956 and MSc in Geology from the Nagpur University in 1958.

He then went to the University of Sheffield in UK as a JN Tata scholar, where he secured a Masters in Metallurgy in 1960, and a PhD in Metallurgy in 1963.

He started his professional career with the British Iron and Steel Research Association in Sheffield in 1963, but always yearned to contribute to the Nation's progress.

He returned to India to join The Tata Iron and Steel Company (now Tata Steel), as it was then known, in 1968, and joined the firm as Assistant to the Director in-charge of Research and Development.

He went on to become General Superintendent in 1978, General Manager in 1979, and President of Tata Steel in 1985.

He became Joint Managing Director of Tata Steel in 1988, and Managing Director in 1992 before retiring in 2001.

He was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2007 for his contribution to industry.

After huge uproar over Maharashtra losing back-to-back big ticket projects worth Rs 2.25 lakh crore in the last three months, the Central government on Oct 31 hurriedly okayed a Rs 500 crore electronic manufacturing cluster at Ranjangaon in Maharashtra under National Policy on Electronics.

The Assam government on  Oct 31 offered Rs 1.5 lakh each to 318 surrendered militants for their rehabilitation.

They are from groups such as the United Gorkha People’s Organisation, Tiwa Liberation Army, Kuki National Liberation Army, United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA).

The ULFA has two factions and one is engaged in the peace process but the Baruah-led group has continued to wield the gun. It operates out of the soil of Myanmar and is active in 4-5 districts of upper Assam.
