At least 141 people were declared dead after a century-old cable bridge collapsed on the Machchhu river in Gujarat’s Morbi on Oct 30.

The over-a-century-old bridge, which had reopened five days ago after extensive repairs and renovation, was crammed with people when it collapsed around 6.30 pm on Oct 30 .

PM Modi has sought urgent mobilisation of teams for rescue ops, while Gujarat CM Patel has given instructions to arrange immediate treatment of injured Road and Building Department Minister Jagdish Panchal blamed the accident prima facie on overcrowding.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured people.

The bridge is a European-style structure built by the Maharaja of Morbi Waghji Thakor, who was awarded “Night commander of the state of India” by Queen Victoria 125 years ago. It is 765 ft long, 4.6 ft wide and 60 ft above the ground.

"The bird is freed," billionaire Elon Musk tweeted on Oct 28  after completing the whopping USD 44 billion takeover of Twitter and firing the social media giant's four top executives, including CEO Parag Agrawal and legal executive Vijaya Gadde.

The New York Times said that Musk, the world's richest man, closed the deal to buy Twitter on Oct 27 .

The Twitter executives who were fired include Agrawal, Gadde, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal and General Counsel Sean Edgett.

The deal's closing removes a cloud of uncertainty that has hung over Twitter's business, employees and shareholders for much of the year, CNN commented.

After initially agreeing to buy the company in April, Musk spent months attempting to get out of the deal, first citing concerns about the number of bots on the platform and later allegations raised by a company whistleblower.

Agrawal, 38, was appointed Twitter CEO in November last year after the social media site's co-founder Jack Dorsey had stepped down.

An IIT Bombay and Stanford alumnus, Agrawal joined Twitter over a decade ago when there were fewer than 1,000 employees at the company.

As the Twitter account of former US President Donald Trump was permanently suspended in January last year, Hyderabad-born Gadde was at the forefront of this dramatic decision undertaken within days of the attempted insurrection by pro-Trump supporters at the US Capitol.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone thanked Agrawal, Segal and Gadde for their "massive contribution" to the business.

In a major step towards establishing defence manufacturing facility in India, the Airbus, in collaboration with TATA Consortium of Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) led by TASL, is establishing manufacturing plant in Vadodara, Gujarat, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 30.

This is the first project of its kind in which a military aircraft will be manufactured in India by a private company. The total cost of the project is Rs 21,935 crore. The aircraft can be used for civilian purposes as well. 

The first Made in India aircraft is expected from September 2026. 

Three students from India who were attending universities in Connecticut died in a two-vehicle crash in western Massachusetts this week, authorities said on Oct 27.

The three people who died were identified by prosecutors as Prem Kumar Reddy Goda, 27; Pavani Gullapally, 22; and Sai Narasimha Patamsetti, 22.

The West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Tamil Nadu chief ministers, who also hold the home portfolio in their respective states, did not attend the Union Home Ministry-driven Chintan Shivir conclave on internal security, which started on Oct 27.

In what could have far-reaching consequences, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will open branches across all states by 2024 besides getting “extra-territorial rights”, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said.

Inaugurating a two-day Chintan Shivir of home ministers on internal security, Shah said his ministry was in the process of amending the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The drafts will soon be placed in Parliament.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Oct 27 registered a case in the paper leak incident in Arunachal Pradesh even as the state government recommended the removal of four Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) members.

The leaked paper pertained to an exam, conducted by APSSC, for the recruitment of 33 assistant engineers (civil). Around 415 candidates appeared for it. The government  has handed over the recommendation of the state cabinet to Governor Brig (retired) BD Mishra for the invocation of provisions of Article 317 to remove four APPSC members. Recently, APPSC chairperson Nipo Nabam had resigned from the post.
