The BCCI has described Jhulan Goswami's two-decade-long international career as "monumental", saying an era has come to an end with the retirement of one of women's cricket's greatest players.

The 39-year-old Jhulan retired from international cricket following the conclusion of the ODI series in England, in which the visitors secured a first-ever clean sweep to give the legendary seamer a fitting farewell.

In an international career spanning over two decades, the second longest in women's international cricket - Jhulan, who made her debut in 2002, represented India in 12 Tests, 204 ODIs and 68 T20Is, picking 355 wickets across formats.

Jhulan, who went on to play five ODI World Cups -- 2005, 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2022 -- remains the leading wicket-taker in the history of the Women's World Cups.

She also remains the only pacer in women's cricket to have 250-plus wickets in ODIs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the world’s first CNG Terminal at Bhavnagar on September 29. Foresight Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) for the development of a CNG Terminal in Gujarat during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Business Summit 2019.

The port will be developed at a cost of Rs 4024 crore and will have the state-of-the-art infrastructure for the World’s first CNG Terminal along with the state of art world’s fourth largest lock gate system.

In addition to the CNG Terminal, the port will also cater to the future needs and demands of the Bhavnagar district for upcoming projects such as vehicle scrapping, container manufacturing, other mega projects, and the Dholera Special Investment Region in particular.

The port will also have an ultra-modern container terminal, multi-purpose terminal, and liquid terminal with direct door-step connectivity to the existing roadway and railway network connecting to the largest industrial zones, dedicated freight corridor, and Northern hinterland of the country.

The proposed port will also result in several economic benefits and cost savings with more cargo volume handling at lesser inland distance travel. The port will help generate direct and indirect employment of up to 1,100 people and will also result in increasing the ancillary port-related services opportunities. 

Moreover, the CNG Import Terminal will provide an additional alternate source of energy to meet the growing demands for clean energy. The promoters have already signed an agreement for the supply of CNG and the development of the CNG Export Terminal with RAK Gas, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. 

In a move to save precious lives of the troops, the Indian Army and Defence Geoinformatics and Research Establishment (DGRE) have jointly installed the Avalanche Monitoring Radar in North Sikkim.

The radar was inaugurated by Lieutenant General Tarn Kumar Aich, General Officer Commanding TriShakti Corps on 20 September 2022 at one of the Forward Posts of the Indian Army deployed at an altitude of 15,000 feet in North Sikkim.

The avalanche radar was made operational by DGRE of DRDO, an organisation which is involved in forecasting and mitigating avalanche hazards faced by the Indian Army in the Himalayan Region. This radar uses a series of short microwave pulses which are scattered at the target and can detect an avalanche in under 3 seconds. The radar can permanently scan the targeted slope for avalanche release and track the path of the avalanche and its size in case it is triggered, the army added.

Army sends RFI for carbines and bullet-proof jackets

The Indian Army on Sep 23  issued a Request for Information (RFI) for Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbine and Bullet Proof Jackets (BPJs). The Defence Acquisition Council, the highest decision-making body of the Ministry of Defence had given the Acceptance of Necessity for the two projects in July this year with the stipulated project cost of Rs 28,732 crore. AoN is the formal approval of the project so that the process can be started.

The RFI is for procurement of 4,25,213 of 5.56 x 45mm CQB Carbine under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category. The Procurement of 47, 627 BPJs along with accessories are to be procured under the category ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ with 60% Indigenous Content. The CQB Carbine should have a minimum service life of 15 years/15,000 rounds whichever is earlier (OEM certificate).

A classified satellite for the US National Reconnaissance Office launched into orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta 4 Heavy rocket on Sep 24 .

The NROL-91 spy satellite lifted off at 3:25 p.m. from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California's Santa Barbara County.

It was the last launch of a Delta 4 from the West Coast. Additional launches are planned from Florida before the Deltas are replaced by ULA’s next-generation Vulcan Centaur rockets.

The Delta IV Heavy configuration was first launched in December 2004. This was the 387th flight of a Delta rocket since 1960 and the 95th and final launch from Vandenberg.

Russia has voiced its support for India and Brazil as "worthy candidates" for permanent membership in the UN Security Council, calling them "key international actors."

During the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov  has expressed his support for India, becoming a permanent member of the Security Council.

In his address to the General Assembly just an hour before External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's speech, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the UN and Security Council have to be aligned to contemporary realities.

He said Moscow sees the prospect of making the Security Council more democratic, exclusively, through broadening the representation of countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America.

India has been at the forefront of efforts at the UN to push for urgent long-pending reform of the Security Council, emphasising that it rightly deserves a place at the UN high table as a permanent member.

At present, the UNSC comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the United States and these countries can veto any substantive resolution.

There has been growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.

State-owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) on Sep 24 said it has signed an agreement with Brazilian national oil company Petrobras for sourcing crude oil from the Latin American nation as part of plans to diversify its sourcing needs.

BPCL imports a large volume of crude oil which is turned into fuel such as petrol and diesel at its three oil refineries at Mumbai, Bina in Madhya Pradesh, and Kochi in Kerala.

The firm, which gets the majority of its supplies from west Asian nations such as Iraq and Saudi Arabia, is looking to diversify its sources of supply in an attempt to cut down reliance on any particular region.

The recent approval by the Union Cabinet to invest in Brazil will help diversify India's crude oil supply.

Bharat PetroResources Limited (BPRL), the upstream oil and gas exploration and production subsidiary of BPCL, plans to invest USD 1.6 billion to develop an oil block in Brazil.

BPRL holds a stake in an ultra-deepwater hydrocarbon block in Brazil, owned and operated by Petrobras.

On July 27, the Union Cabinet gave approval to the firm to invest an additional USD 1.6 billion in the Brazilian oil block BM-SEAL-11.

The block is to start production from 2026-27. BPRL has a 40 per cent stake in the block. Brazil's national oil company Petrobras is the operator with 60 per cent interest.

India is on track to attract USD 100 billion foreign direct investment (FDI) in the current fiscal on account of economic reforms and ease of doing business, the government said on Sep 24 . In 2021-22, the country received the "highest ever" foreign inflows of USD 83.6 billion.

"This FDI has come from 101 countries, and invested across 31 union territories and states and 57 sectors in the country.

On the back of economic reforms and Ease of Doing Business in recent years, India is on track to attract USD 100 billion FDI in the current FY (financial year," the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement.

It said that to attract foreign investments, the government has put in place a liberal and transparent policy wherein most sectors are open to FDI under the automatic route.

The reform measures include liberalization of guidelines and regulations, in order to reduce unnecessary compliance burden, bring down cost and enhance the ease of doing business in India, it added.

FDI equity inflows in India dipped by 6 per cent to USD 16.6 billion during April-June period of the current fiscal.

It also said that to address the import of low-quality and hazardous toys and to enhance domestic manufacturing of toys, several strategic interventions have been taken by the government.

The import of toys in 2021-22 have reduced by 70 per cent to USD 110 million (Rs 877.8 crore). On the other hand, exports rose by 61 per cent to USD 326 million.
