World’s second-richest billionaire Gautam Adani made more than Rs 1,600 crore per day in the past year to double his wealth to Rs 10.94 lakh crore, according to IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022 released on  Sep 22

Adani’s net worth is now Rs 3 lakh crore more than that of Mukesh Ambani (Rs 7.94 lakh crore) who added Rs 210 crore every day last year.

In the last five years, the first-generation entrepreneur’s wealth has increased by 1440 per cent. The combined market value of Adani group’s 7 publicly traded firms, all of which carry the industrialist’s name, has increased significantly in the past few years. With Adani owning up to 75 per cent stake in some of his firms, he benefited most from the sharp buying seen across Adani listed stocks.

For the first time in 10 years, Ambani of Reliance Industries has lost the top ranking despite his wealth increasing by 11 per cent in an eventful year, which saw many headwinds including the Russia-Ukraine war. His wealth is pegged at Rs 7,94,700 crore and has increased by 115 per cent in the last 5 years.

The government has nominated veteran industrialist and Chairman emeritus of Tata Sons Ratan Tata as one of the trustees of PM Cares Fund, and inducted Sudha Murthy, former chairperson, of Infosys Foundation, into its advisory board.

Others nominated to be part of the advisory board include former Comptroller and Auditor General of India Rajiv Mehrishi and Anand Shah, co-founder of Teach or India and former CEO of Indicorps and Piramal Foundation.

The PM CARES Fund collected Rs 7,014 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 3,076 crore in 2019-20. Till 2020-21, nearly Rs 4,000 crore has been disbursed for procurement of Covid-19 vaccines, ventilators, oxygen cylinders, etc. Contributions to PM CARES Fund by companies are eligible to be considered CSR spending.

The IOC sent a letter after its Executive Board meeting on September 8 and warned IOA that it will be suspended if elections are not held as per the existing constitution and under the provisions of the IOC Charter. It also proposed a joint meeting on September 27 and said that IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta will be the main point of contact for communications.

Mehta later told this newspaper that three members from the IOA would be going to Lausanne -- Mehta and the two senior vice-presidents Anand and Anil Khanna.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of comedian Raju Srivastav who passed away in Delhi on  Sep 21 at the age of 58.

Raju Srivastava suffered a heart attack on August 10 while working out at a hotel. He was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and underwent angioplasty. Since then he was hooked up to a ventilator and never regained consciousness.

Srivastava was in the entertainment industry since the 1980s and shot to fame after participating in the first season of the reality stand-up comedy show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2005.

He has also appeared in supporting roles in Hindi films such as 'Maine Pyar Kiya', 'Baazigar', the remake of Bombay to Goa and 'Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiya'. Before his death, he was the chairman of the Film Development Council Uttar Pradesh.

Train services of the South Eastern Railway (SER) remained partially affected on  Sep 21 as Kurmis continued blocking tracks at two stations in West Bengal for more than 24 hours to press for their demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The blockades at Khemasuli in Paschim Medinipur district and Kustaur in Purulia district, which began at 4 AM on sep 20 , continued on sep 21 .

Besides the ST tag, the agitators are also demanding the inclusion of Kurmali language in the eighth schedule of the Constitution.

Four southern universities, including the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, are among the 48 Indian universities that are either engaged or actively pursuing collaborations with foreign higher education institutions (HEIs) under the government’s twinning scheme.

Periyar University, Salem, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Karnataka and Pondicherry University are the others from the south seeking collaborations under the scheme, said University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences formally launched the 2022-2023 academic session with two new international dual degree programmes, the first of its kind, on September 12, 2022. About 26 central universities figure in the list of eligible Indian HEIs, the UGC chairman said.

Days after the Jharkhand cabinet led by Hemant Soren approved proposals related to the domicile policy and a 27% reservation for OBCs, the CM has ordered a job quota scheme for locals in the private sector from next month.

In a series of review meetings held with various departments, Soren directed officials to implement the scheme providing for 75% reservation to the locals with a monthly salary of up to Rs 40,000 in the private sector.

The state assembly had passed the Jharkhand State Employment of Local Candidates in Private Sector Bill, 2021 in September last year.
