Indian women's hockey team goalkeeper Savita expressed her gratitude for being nominated for the FIH Women's Goalkeeper of the Year Award 2021-22 and said that she feels she is moving in the right direction.

Savita, who had won the Award in the same category in the previous edition said that the support from her teammates and coaching staff has proven to be helpful.

Savita led the Indian Women's Hockey Team as Captain in the debut season of the FIH Pro League 2021/22 where the team finished in the third position. She also led the team as Captain at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games where India beat New Zealand 1-1 (2-1 SO) to win the coveted Bronze medal.

Apart from Savita, Harmanpreet Singh (FIH Player Of the Year Men), PR Sreejesh (FIH Goalkeeper of the Year Men), Sanjay (FIH Rising Star of the Year Men), Mumtaz Khan (FIH Rising Star of the Year Women), Graham Reid (FIH Men's Team Coach of the Year Men) and Janneke Schopman (FIH Women's Team Coach of the Year Women) have also been nominated for FIH Hockey Star Awards 2021-22.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during the last leg of his visit to Saudi Arabia, met Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud in Jeddah.

He also handed over a letter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mohammad. The letter reiterated an invitation to visit India at an early date and also to convey greetings on the forthcoming National Day of Saudi Arabia on September 23.

Earlier, Jaishankar held a meeting with the Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf.

The two leaders signed an MoU on the mechanism of consultations between India and the six-nation bloc.

French foreign minister, Catherine Colonna, will embark on the three-day official visit to India beginning on Sep 13 . The visit will review the bilateral relationship between India and France and focus on ways to enhance cooperation in trade, defence and climate action. Colonna will meet PM Modi on Sep 14 . This year marks the 75th anniversary of Indo-French diplomatic relations.

Colonna will have a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and also National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.The discussions would be based on regional and global security issues, strengthened defence cooperation, as well as the implementation of France’s counter-terrorism  cooperation with India, which is hosting the “No Money for Terror” conference this year.

Colonna is also scheduled to travel to Mumbai for interactions with leading Indian investors who have business interests in France. It is noteworthy here that France has been ranked as the top European destination for FDI for the third year in a row.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has directed schools to ensure students’ mental wellbeing. The directive comes in the wake of a national survey undertaken by the NCERT, in which students flagged schoolwork, examinations as well as the wait for results as some of major causes of anxiety.

The survey also found that students faced difficulty in online schooling and experienced mood swings, a lack of concentration and peer pressure. Based on the findings, the NCERT released guidelines in a report titled Early identification and intervention for mental health problems in school-going children and adolescents.

NCERT has asked schools to set up a mental health advisory panel to counsel students. School have also been asked to ensure proper awareness about mental health issues, including introducing mental health programmes that are gender- and age-appropriate.

However, the setting up of a mental health advisory panel in each school recommended on earlier occasions too have failed to achieve the desired results

The Karnataka Postal Department has launched a mega drive to popularise digital transactions across Post Offices in the state. This is in connection with a nationwide drive organised by India Post.

Even the Postal department had technical glitches with QR payments since its inception in April this year.

The UN labour agency estimates that some 50 million people worldwide were living in "modern slavery" -- either in forced labour or marriage -- at the end of last year, marking a 25% jump from its previous report five years ago.

The International Labour Organisation and partners point to worrying trends such as "commercial sexual exploitation" affecting nearly one in four people who are subject to forced labour and with the poor, women and children hardest hit.

ILO, along with the UN's International Organisation for Migration and the Walk Free Foundation -- a rights group that focuses on modern slavery -- reported that 28 million people were in forced labour and 22 in forced marriages at the end of 2021.

The report said such figures marked an increase of 10 million people living in modern slavery since the last such report was published in 2017, based on figures a year earlier. Two-thirds of the increase pertained to forced marriages alone, it said.

Based on available data, ILO and partners found increases in child and forced marriages in countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Congo, Egypt, India, Uganda and Yemen.

But the report said wealthier countries were "not immune" to the problem, with nearly one-in-four forced marriages taking place in high or upper-middle-income countries.

Crises including the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and armed conflict have underpinned rises in extreme poverty, unsafe migration, and gender-based violence in recent years, raising the risk of all forms of modern slavery, it said.

All told, more than 2/3 of all forced marriages were found in the Asia-Pacific region "the world's most populous region " but the highest number per capita came in Arab countries where nearly 5 in 1,000 people were in forced marriages.

Forced marriage, the report said, is closely tied to "long-established patriarchal attitudes and practices" while 85 per cent of cases were driven by "family pressure".

Regarding forced labour, about one in eight of those affected were children and half of those in commercial sexual exploitation.

Director-General Guy Rider of the UN labour agency, which brings together workers, businesses and governments, called for "an all-hands-on-deck approach" and said, "trade unions, employers' groups, civil society and ordinary people all have critical roles to play."

India on  Sep 12 handed over the 12th consignment of humanitarian aid comprising essential medicines and equipment to Ukraine as part of its ongoing effort to help the European nation to mitigate the economic hardships it is facing due to the war with Russia.

On March 1, India had sent the first tranche of humanitarian assistance comprising medicines and other relief materials to Ukraine via Poland.

India has not criticised Russia for its aggression against Ukraine.

New Delhi has repeatedly called upon the Russian and Ukrainian sides to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue, and also expressed its support for all diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the two countries.
