The chief executive of  Switzerland's scandal-hit banking giant Credit Suisse Thomas Gottstein has announced his resignation.

He joined the executive board in 2015 and was appointed CEO in 2020. Gottstein is to be replaced by Ulrich Koerner, currently head of asset management, with effect from August 1.

Koerner previously worked at Credit Suisse in different roles between 1998 and 2009 after which he worked at rival bank UBS between 2009 and 2020.

The 60-year-old German and Swiss citizen returned to Credit Suisse in 2021.

The bank has been hit by a series of scandals and crises including the implosions of financial services firms Greensill and Archegos last year which cost Credit Suisse billions.

Indian exports such as pharmaceuticals, telecom equipment, tea, coffee and marine products have been affected due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal informed the Parliament.

He, however, did not quantify the extent of the trade disruption during the period.

The death toll due to the consumption of spurious liquor in Gujarat's Botad district has reached 40 with seven more people succumbing in the last 12 hours.

Out of the deceased, 31 belonged to different villages in Botad and nine were natives of neighbouring Dhandhuka taluka in Ahmedabad district.

Nearly 50 people were still admitted to hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad and Ahmedabad.

The Botad and Ahmedabad police on  july 26 registered three First Information Reports (FIRs) against nearly 20 culprits under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder), 328 (causing hurt by poison) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and have arrested at least 10 of them so far.

The Vadodara rural police on  july 27 nabbed Jatubha Rathod, one of the accused in an FIR registered by Barvala police in Botad and absconding since being booked.

The Gujarat Home Department has formed a three-member committee, headed by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Subhash Trivedi, to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and submit a report within three days, as per a government release.

A police investigation has revealed that a person named Jayesh aka Raju had stolen 600 litres of methyl alcohol from a godown in Ahmedabad where he worked as a manager and then sold it to his Botad-based cousin Sanjay for Rs 40,000 on July 25.

The government has said it will set up the country’s first national school board for Vedic education. Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State of Education Dr Subhas Sarkar said that Maharshi Sandipani Rashtriya Veda Sanskrit Shiksha Board (MSRVSSB) and Bhartiya Shiksha Board (BSB) would be established.

Both will be undertaken by Ujjain-based Maharshi Sandipani Rashtriya Veda Vidya Pratishthan (MSRVVP), an autonomous body of HRD for promoting Vedic education in the country, the minister said. The Vedic board, which will function like any other educational board, is aimed at combining Vedas and modern education, the minister said.

To a question by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on the details under which the first national school board on Vedic education and the BSB has been approved by the government, the minister said the MSRVSSB has been established as an autonomous body for promoting Vedic Education in the country.

Punjab Advocate General (AG) Anmol Rattan Sidhu has resigned from his post citing personal reasons. He remained in office for just four months. In the last 10 months, the state is now set to have its fifth AG. Senior advocate Vinod Ghai is likely to be appointed as the next AG.

Sidhu was appointed on the post when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government came into power in the state in March this year.

Mann has apparently cleared the name of Ghai as new Punjab AG. The file has been sent to Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit for formal approval. Ghai, who earned his LLB degree from Panjab University in 1989, was designated as a senior advocate in May 2012.

Sidhu took the post after senior advocate Deepinder Singh Patwalia, who was appointed as the Advocate General of Punjab on Nov. 19, 2021 by the then Charanjit Singh Channi government, resigned in March, a day after the Congress was routed out of power by the Aam Aadmi Party in the Assembly elections.

To ensure that ample stock of the national flag for its ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ programme is available this Independence Day, the culture ministry has collaborated with the postal department, state governments and e-commerce websites.

Officials said 1.6 lakh post offices across the country would start selling the Tricolour from August 1. For adequate production and supply, arrangements had been made with self-help groups and flag manufacturing units.

Three channels are being made operational to make sure flags are available for the three-day programme — August 13-15. State governments and UTs have been asked to create flag delivery points in schools, health centres, Anganwadi centres and ration shops.
