In a big setback for India, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has pulled out of the Commonwealth Games due to injury. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics champion was forced to give the quadrennial Games a miss due to abductor strain, considered a common groin injury among athletes. He sustained it during the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon on july 23.

Neeraj was supposed to leave for Birmingham on july 24 for the multi-discipline event but he had to postpone his departure and instead went for an MRI. Neeraj had said after the silver medal at the Worlds that he strained his right thigh after the throw in the fourth attempt. Neeraj is the defending champion at the CWG and was supposed to be India's flag-bearer.

·         Indian Olympic Association (IOA) once again has urged the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the Victoria Games organising committee to take a fresh look at the exclusion of shooting and wrestling. During the annual general meeting, acting president Anil Khanna and IOA treasurer Anandeshwar Pandey met CGF president Dame Louise Martin and discussed the matter.

Droupadi Murmu was on july 25 sworn in as India's 15th President at an impressive ceremony in the packed and historic Central Hall of Parliament.

Hailing from the Santhal community, Murmu is the first tribal leader to assume the office of the President.

Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered the oath of office to Murmu in the presence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union ministers, governors, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and a host of dignitaries.

Former President Pratibha Patil, and Chief Ministers Naveen Patnaik, Eknath Shinde, Jairam Thakur, Yogi Adityanath and N Biren Singh were among the dignitaries present.

Dressed in a white saree with a green and red border, Murmu took the oath of office in the name of God in Hindi to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and the law".

Murmu was given a 21-gun salute after which she signed the oath register amid thunderous applause and thumping of desks.

At the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the new President inspected the tri-services guard of honour.

The victory run seemed certain and her numbers were boosted with support from a section of opposition parties such as the BJD, Shiv Sena, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, YSR Congress, BSP, TDP.

Some of these parties had earlier supported the candidature of the joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.

Her first steps in politics were taken in Rairangpur where she was a elected as BJP councillor in the Rairangpur Notified Area Council in 1997 and rose to being a minister in Odisha's BJD-BJP coalition government from 2000 to 2004.

In 2015, she was appointed governor of Jharkhand and stayed in the post till 2021.

Murmu was awarded the Nilkanth Award for the Best MLA of the year in 2007 by the Odisha Legislative assembly.

West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee, arrested in connection with an alleged school jobs scam, was on  july 25 taken to Odisha in an air ambulance by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and admitted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar as per direction of the Calcutta High Court.

The court on July 24 directed the ED, which had arrested Chatterjee in connection with its probe into the scam, to take him to the health facility by an air ambulance.

Chatterjee, who is currently the industries and parliamentary affairs minister of the Mamata Banerjee government, was remanded to ED custody till  july 25 by a lower court in Kolkata.

He was the education minister when the alleged teacher recruitment scam took place at West Bengal government-run and-aided schools.

The Calcutta HC directed that the minister, be produced before a special ED court in Kolkata through virtual mode at 4 PM on july 25 .

The CBI has busted a multi-state racket of imposters and arrested four of them for allegedly attempting to cheat people of Rs 100 crore with false promises of Rajya Sabha seats and governorship.

The agency had conducted searches recently in connection with the case, and four members of the gang were arrested.

One of the accused fled during the search operation after assaulting CBI officers In its FIR, the CBI has named Kamalakar Premkumar Bandgar of Maharashtra's Latur, Ravindra Vithal Naik of Karnataka's Belgaum, and Delhi-NCR-based Mahendra Pal Arora, Abhishek Boora and Mohammed Aijaz Khan in connection with the case.

It is alleged that Bandgar was posing as a senior CBI officer and flaunting his "connections" with highly placed officials and had asked Boora, Arora, Khan and Naik to bring any sort of work that he could fix in lieu of payment of huge illegal gratification.

They conspired with "the sole ulterior motive of cheating private persons by falsely assuring them for the arrangement of seats in Rajya Sabha, appointment as governor, appointment as chairman in different government-run organisations under central government ministries and departments against huge pecuniary consideration," the FIR alleged.

The European Commission has approved a smallpox vaccine for use against monkeypox after the World Health Organization declared monkeypox a global health emergency.

On july 23 , the WHO declared the monkeypox outbreak, which has affected nearly 16,000 people in 72 countries, to be a global health emergency -- the highest alarm it can sound. Imvanex has been approved in the EU since 2013 for the prevention of smallpox.

It was also considered a potential vaccine for monkeypox because of the similarity between the monkeypox virus and the smallpox virus. Monkeypox is less dangerous and contagious than smallpox, which was eradicated in 1980.

The first symptoms of monkeypox are fever, headaches, muscle pain and back pain during the course of five days. Rashes subsequently appear on the face, the palms of hands and soles of feet, followed by lesions, spots and finally scabs.

A surge in monkeypox infections has been reported since early May outside the West and Central African countries where the disease has long been endemic.

The EMA carries out a scientific assessment of drugs and gives a recommendation on whether any medicine should be marketed or not.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on  july 25 criticized Greece for allegedly violating a settlement that has governed relations between the rivals for nearly a century.

In a statement released on the 99th anniversary of the Lausanne Treaty, Erdogan accused Athens of undermining the rights of the Muslim minority in Greece's Thrace region. Muslims in Thrace make up about 32% of the province's population and consist of ethnic Turks, Roma and Bulgarian-speaking Pomaks.

The 1923 treaty was signed by the new Republic of Turkey to settle disputes with the Allies, including Greece, following World War I and the Turkish War of Independence. It outlined the rights of the remaining Muslim minority in Greece and Christians in Turkey after a bitter conflict between the countries, which was followed by a population exchange. It also set out conditions for the Greek rule of the Aegean islands that lie off Turkey's coast.

Ankara has recently complained that Greece has violated the treaty by militarizing the islands. Athens says it is acting according to international law and is defending its territory in the face of constant Turkish hostility.

On july 22, the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the closure of four Muslim minority schools in Thrace, saying it demonstrated "discriminatory and oppressive policies" by the Greek government.

The Greek Foreign Ministry rejected the "unsubstantiated" allegations, saying the schools were suspended because student numbers fell below minimum requirements.

NATO members Greece and Turkey have been at loggerheads for decades over a series of issues, including disputes over undersea exploration rights in the eastern Mediterranean and the sovereignty of uninhabited Aegean islets. The two neighbours have come to the brink of war three times in the past half-century.
