• Poland's armed forces said that military exercises involving thousands of NATO soldiers have begun.
• They are regular exercises aimed at improving the security of the alliance's eastern flank but come this year with Russia's war against Ukraine raging nearby.
• Due to those circumstances, Poland's military appealed to the public on May 1 not to publish information or photos of the columns of military vehicles expected to move through the country in the coming weeks.
• It warned that 'ill-considered activity' could harm the alliance's security.
• The Polish Army said in a statement that 18,000 soldiers from over 20 countries were taking part in the Defender Europe 2022 and Swift Response 2022 exercises that are taking place in Poland and eight other countries.
• The exercises are scheduled to run May 1-27.

• US First Lady Jill Biden will visit Romania and Slovakia this week to meet with displaced Ukrainian parents and children, aid workers, US service members and embassy personnel, her office said on May 2 .
• Romania and Slovakia have taken in hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of their country.
• In Slovakia on April 30 , celebrated as Mother's Day in the United States, Biden will travel to the city of Kosice and village of Vysne Nemecke to meet with refugees, aid workers and the Slovakians who are supporting them.
• The first lady's visit is the latest show of US support for Ukraine and the countries assisting it.
• Her trip follows a trip to Kyiv by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who met with President Volodymyr Zelensky on April 29.
• During her May 5-9 travels, Biden will visit US service members in Romania before heading to Bucharest.
• In the Romanian capital , she will meet with members of the government, US embassy staff and teachers working with displaced Ukrainian children, the statement from her office said.
• Her trip also includes a visit to the Slovak capital Bratislava to meet with US embassy staff and government officials.
• Nearly 5.5 million refugees have fled Ukraine since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion on February 24, according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Germany on May 2 on the first leg of his three-nation Europe trip during which he will hold detailed bilateral discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and co-chair the India-Germany inter-governmental consultations.
• Modi and Olaf will co-chair the 6th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC).
• In his departure statement, Modi had said that his visit to Berlin will be an opportunity to hold detailed bilateral discussions with Chancellor Scholz, whom he met at G20 last year in his previous capacity as Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister.
• In 2021, India and Germany commemorated 70 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations and have been strategic partners since 2000, Modi said.
• The two leaders will also address a high-level roundtable where they will interact with top CEOs of both countries.
