Mahatma Gandhi's statue vandalised in New York

A life-sized bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised in a New York City neighbourhood on Feb 5 , an act strongly condemned as 'despicable' by the Consulate General of India.

The 8-foot-high statue, located in Manhattan's Union Square, was defaced by some unknown persons

The statue was donated by the Gandhi Memorial International Foundation and was dedicated on October 2, 1986 to mark the 117th birth anniversary of Gandhi. American civil rights leader Bayard Rustin had delivered a keynote speech at the ceremony.

Incidentally, the statue was removed in 2001, conserved, and reinstalled in a landscape garden area in 2002. This is not the first time a statue of Gandhi has been desecrated in the US.

In January last year, unknown miscreants had vandalised, broken, and ripped from the base a statue of Gandhi in a park in the US state of California

In December 2020, Khalistani-supporters had desecrated a Gandhi statue in Washington, DC in front of the Indian Embassy.

Also in June 2020, some unknown miscreants vandalised the statue of Gandhi outside the Indian embassy in the US with graffiti and spray painting, prompting the mission to register a complaint with the local law enforcement agencies.

Vandalism of the statue of the apostle of peace happened during the week of nationwide protests against the custodial killing of African-American George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

IAF's LCA Tejas to show flying skills at Singapore Airshow

The Indian Air Force's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Tejas, will be showcasing its flying skills at the Singapore Airshow 2022 being held from February 15 to 18.

The airshow will have eight flying displays and flypasts from four air forces and two commercial companies .

The Tejas aircraft had also participated in the Dubai Airshow in November last year.

Tejas, manufactured by state-run aerospace giant Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, is a single-engine and highly agile multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments.

Apart from the IAF LCA, the US military, the Indonesian Aerobatic Team and the Singapore Air Force will put up airshows.

Nearly 600 companies will participate as well.

Last seen at the 2018 Singapore Airshow, Indonesia's Jupiter Aerobatic Team, also known as "The Jupiters", will thrill the audiences with their six-plane formations and precision flying.

Returning with two performances this year, the Republic of Singapore Air Force will feature an F-16C fighter jet displaying solo aerobatics, and a pair of AH-64D Apache attack helicopters.

The United States Marine Corps' F-35B Lightning II, the world's first short-takeoff, vertical landing stealth fighter, will also be featured at the airshow along with the United States Air Force's B-52 Stratofortress in a fly-by.

Commercial plane watchers can also expect to see demo fly overs by Airbus' A350-1000 and Boeing's wide-bodied B777-9 .

Pakistan has said that the US government has approved the nomination of Sardar Masood Khan as its Ambassador to Washington, days after a prominent US Congressman urged President Joe Biden to reject his diplomatic credentials and termed him a "bona fide terrorist sympathiser."

Khan, who has previously served as the 'president' of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) until August last year, was nominated as Pakistan's ambassador to the US in November.

Khan had previously served as Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN in Geneva and New York and as ambassador to China. He will be replacing the outgoing ambassador of Pakistan in Washington Asad Majeed Khan.

ICICI Lombard offers cyber insurance to Airtel Payments Bank customers

ICICI Lombard General Insurance has said that it is offering cyber insurance to customers of Airtel Payments Bank as rising digital payments and transactions pose threat of cyber fraud.

ICICI Lombard's cyber insurance solution provides financial protection to customers against potential financial fraud relating to banking, credit or debit card; identity theft; phishing or email spoofing and more.

Airtel Payments Bank customers can purchase this cyber insurance policy within minutes using the Airtel Thanks app.

The insurance comes with zero waiting period and allows users to make multiple claims multiple times during the policy tenure, within the limits of the insured amount opted for.

The policy will provide a 90-day discovery period followed by a seven-day reporting period.

This means that if the insured discovers an unauthorised transaction processed from their card or account on the 90th day from the transaction date, they can still report it in the next seven days to the issuing bank or mobile wallet company.

The country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has posted 62 per cent jump in standalone net profit at Rs 8,432 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2021.

The bank had earned a net profit of Rs 5,196 crore in the year-ago periodTotal income also rose to Rs 78,352 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 75,981 crore in the same period of 2020-21. On a consolidated basis, the SBI Group clocked 51 per cent increase in net profit at Rs 9,692 crore during the quarter as against Rs 6,402 crore in the year-ago period.

The bank's asset quality improved as gross non-performing assets fell to 4.5 per cent of gross advances as of December 31, 2021 from 4.77 per cent by the year-ago same period.

However, net NPAs rose marginally to 1.34 per cent from 1.23 per cent at the end of the third quarter of 2020-21.

State-owned Bank of Baroda has reported doubling of its net profit to Rs 2,197 crore on a standalone basis in the quarter ended in December 2021.The lender had posted a net profit of Rs 1,061 crore in the same quarter a year ago.

Total income during the third quarter of 2021-22 rose to Rs 20,482.26 crore as against Rs 20,407.45 crore in Q3FY21.

The bank witnessed improvement in its bad loan ratio, with the gross non-performing assets (NPAs) falling to 7.25 per cent of the gross advances as of December 31, 2021 from 8.48 per cent by end of December 2020.

Net NPAs came down to 2.25 per cent from 2.39 per cent.

Union Bank of India's Q3 net profit jumps 49 per cent to Rs 1,085 crore

State-owned Union Bank of India has posted a 49 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 1,085 crore in the third quarter ended December 31.

The bank had earned a net profit of Rs 727 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

Its total income during the October-December quarter of 2021-22 declined to Rs 19,453.74 crore from Rs 20,102.84 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

On the asset quality front, the bank's gross non-performing assets (NPAs) fell to 11.62 per cent of the gross advances by the end of the December 2022 quarter, compared with 13.49 per cent by the end of December 2020.

However, net NPAs increased to 4.09 per cent, up from 3.27 per cent at the end of December 2020.
