The Indian U-17 women's team is gearing up currently in Jamshedpur as part of their preparatory process for FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2022 which is slated to kick-off from October 11 later this year.

Among the 35 players summoned, Shilky Devi has already been a part of the Senior National Women's team squad for the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022, while Astam Oraon, Nitu Linda and Lynda Kom was part of the SAFF U-19 Women's Championship 2021 which was held in Bangladesh in December 2021.

The girls are currently training under Suren Chettri while Head Coach Thomas Dennerby and Assistant Coach Alex Ambrose will join them soon.

The camp in Jamshedpur has been set up with support from the Government of Jharkhand. Earlier, the Senior National Women's team had also camped for several months in Jamshedpur ahead of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022 with infrastructural and logistical help coming in from the State Government.

Britain and Ireland dropped plans on Feb 7 for a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, opting instead to try to stage the 2028 European Championship.

The pursuit of the flagship FIFA men's tournament was being led by the English Football Association, which assessed the prospects of winning after losing badly in 2010 in a tainted contest for the 2018 edition.

The decision is a boost for Spain and Portugal, who are pursuing a joint bid for 2030, and with UEFA desiring one European candidate.

England last hosted the World Cup in 1966 and also failed with a bid for the 2006 tournament. But it hosted the 1996 European Championship and Wembley had eight games last year when the competition was staged across Europe. Scotland also staged four Euro 2020 games at Hampden Park.

Although the Wembley final was marred by violence by England fans ahead of the loss to Italy, UEFA has shown its backing to London by choosing to stage a game with CONMEBOL between European champion Italy and South American champion Argentina in the city in June.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a 216-foot statue of Ramanujacharya in Hyderabad and highlighted the 11th century saint's message of equality of all.

The 'Statue of Equality' commemorates Ramanujacharya who promoted the idea of equality in all aspects of living, including faith, caste and creed.

Modi, who was on a half-day visit to the city, participated in worship at the venue at Muchintal on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The statue is made of 'panchaloha', a combination of five metals: gold, silver, copper, brass, and zinc and is among one of the tallest metallic statues in sitting position. It is mounted on a 54-foot high base building named 'Bhadra Vedi'.

It has floors devoted for a Vedic digital library and research centre, ancient Indian texts, a theatre, an educational gallery detailing many works of Sri Ramanujacharya.

Ramanujacharya worked tirelessly for the uplift of people with the spirit of every human being equal regardless of nationality, gender, race, caste or creed.

The inauguration of the statue is a part of the 12-day Ramanuja Sahasrabdi Samaroham, the ongoing 1000th birth anniversary celebrations of Ramanujacharya.

In relief for eighty Afghan Army cadets stranded in India after completing their training at various military academies in the country, the Indian government has offered them a 12-month training programme in effective English communication for business and office purposes.

The training programme is part of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) initiative that seeks to provide technical assistance to neighbouring countries and their citizens.

The training programme will start from February 7 and the cadets will be placed at three different institutes and provided accommodation and a monthly allowance.

The training of Foreign Gentlemen Cadets from Afghanistan in various military academies continued in India even after the Taliban takeover of Kabul. India has been forthright in extending assistance to the trainees to travel to Afghanistan or countries which give them entry.

Foreign Gentlemen Cadets earn various diplomas and certificates during their training in India.

This process of allowing Afghan cadets to train in Indian academies started in the 1970s. In all, over 1,000 Afghan cadets have passed out of the Indian Military Academy and Officers Training Academy.

The Afghan cadets also join the National Defence Academy for undergraduate training.
