Ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly Polls, former cricketer Dinesh Mongia and others joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi on Dec 28 .

Congress MLA Fateh Bajwa from Qadian and Balwinder Singh Laddi from Shri Hargobindpur Sahib joined the BJP in presence of Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Besides, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Gurtej Singh Gundhiyana, President of United Christian Front Punjab Kamal Bakshi, Advocate in Punjab and Haryana High Court Madhumeet, Civic body member from Nihal Singh Wala, Jagdeep Singh Dhaliwal and Ex-MP from Sangoor Rajdev Khalsi also joined the party.

Renewable energy sector gets $7.27 bn FDI since 2014-15: Govt

India’s renewable energy Industry received foreign direct investment (FDI) worth $7.27 billion from 2014-15 till June 2021, said the ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The ministry also mentioned that India’s renewable energy programme is driven by private sector investments.

The credit for hike in FDI, the ministry gives to its liberal foreign investment policy that allows the foreign investors to enter into joint ventures with an Indian partner for financial and/or technical collaboration and for setting up of renewable energy-based power generation projects. Up to 100 % foreign investment as equity qualifies for automatic approval, under the extant FDI policy of the government.

As per REN21 Renewables 2020 Global status Report , during the period 2014 -2019, renewable energy programmes and projects in India attracted an investment of US$ 64.4 billion. In the year 2019 alone, US$ 11.2 billion were invested.

At COP 21, India had committed to achieving 40% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil energy sources by 2030. The government claims to have achieved this target in November 2021 itself.

Bank frauds fall by 56 per cent in FY21: RBI data

As businesses took out fewer loans, bank frauds declined both in the current and previous fiscal. In FY21, fresh fraud occurrences fell by a staggering 56% over FY20, according to RBI data. The central bank, which also reports frauds based on the date of reporting by banks, found that the value of frauds too dipped in FY21 by 25% over FY20.

According to the report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India 2020-21, fresh frauds in FY21 stood at Rs 14,158 crore as against Rs 32,290 crore seen in FY20. Based on the date of reporting, the amount of frauds fell to Rs 1.38 lakh crore in FY21 from Rs 1.85 lakh crore in FY20.

An overwhelming majority of the cases, or 99% to be precise, relate to advances or loans extended to businesses big and small and retail loans as well. But in terms of volume, the number of fraudulent card or internet transactions is on the rise and accounted for 35% of the total number of cases in FY21. However, in terms of value, it’s negligible at Rs 119 crore.

For the first six months of the current fiscal, there were nearly 1,600 instances of frauds aggregating Rs 353 crore. Of this, over 1,100 cases pertain to card/internet transactions, though the value stood at Rs 32 crore. But the increase in number is alarming as it erodes customer confidence just when the government’s focus on digital banking is taking shape. Interestingly, private banks accounted for a majority for card, internet and cash-related cases, while the major share of loan-related cases pertained to state-run banks.

Seasoned India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was on Dec 28 shortlisted as one of the four nominees for the ICC Test Cricketer of the year award.

The 35-year-old from Chennai snapped 52 wickets from eight Tests at an average of 16.23 and also contributed 337 runs with the bat at 28.08 with one century in the last one year.

Besides Ashwin, England skipper Joe Root, New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson and Sri Lanka opener Dimuth Karunaratne were the others to be nominated for the prestigious award, which recognise the outstanding achievements and feats in cricket over the past year.

The winner of the award will be announced on January 24.

For the second quarter India’s public debt increased to Rs 125,71,747 crore at end-September 2021 from Rs 120,91,193 crore, up by 3.97% on quarter-on-quarter basis. “Total liabilities (including liabilities under the ‘public account’) of the government, as per provisional data, increased to Rs 125,71,747 crore at end-September 2021 from Rs 120,91,193 crore at end-June 2021.

This represented a quarter-on-quarter increase of 3.97% in Q2 FY22. Public debt accounted for 91.15% of total outstanding liabilities at end-September 2021 from 91.60% at end-June 2021,” the latest public debt management quarterly report said.

High public debt has been a matter of concern for the government. Earlier this month, the finance ministry had said that the government’s debt is estimated to be at 62% of the GDP as of March 31, 2022 and government is already taking steps to reduce it.

During Q2 of FY22, the government issued dated securities worth Rs 3.83 lakh cr against Rs 3.18 lakh cr in Q1 FY21, while repayments were at Rs 34,070 crore. The weighted average yield of primary issuances increased to 6.26% in Q2 FY22 from 6.11% a year ago.

Defending champion Koneru Humpy failed to live up to her billing, finishing sixth with 7.5 points in the women's section of the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship 2021 in Warsaw .

In the open event, young Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh scored nine points to finish a creditable ninth.

R Vaishali was the next best Indian performer in the women's section, finishing in the 14th spot with seven points followed by Vantika Agrawal (6 points, 38th place), and Padmini Rout (5.5, 49th).
