UP government launches massive drive to distribute free tablets, smartphones to 1 crore students

Giving a push to the digital India campaign and to link the youth of Uttar Pradesh with it, the state government launched a massive drive to distribute tablets and smartphones free of cost to one crore students of undergraduate and post graduate courses in Lucknow on Dec 25

In all, 40,000 tablets and 60,000 smartphones were distributed among the youth on Dec 25 . On this occasion, CM Yogi honored Mirabai Chanu, the weight lifter who had won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She was given Rs 1.50 crore as honorarium and Rs 10 lakh was given to her coach. Chanu could not attend the felicitation ceremony organised by the UP government for all the Olympians in August this year.

He virtually launched ‘Digi Shakti Portal’ and ‘Digi Shakti Adhyayan App’ which is installed in the devices given to youth.

The CM also announced that along with tablets and smartphones, the government is planning to provide free internet access and content for the students.

Narandran 'Jody' Kollapen, who is Indian origin, has been appointed to South Africa's highest judicial bench, the Constitutional Court.

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Dec 24 announced the appointment of 64-year-old Kollapen and Rammaka Steven Mathopo as the latest additions to the Constitutional Court after a lengthy process of public interviews.

Kollapen and Mathopo were among the five candidates recommended to Ramaphosa in October this year for the two vacancies. Both will take office from January 1, 2022. Kollapen was interviewed twice before for appointment to the Constitutional Court but was unsuccessful then despite having served two terms as an acting judge of the same institution.

Mali's government has denied any deployment of Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group following charges by a group of 15 Western powers involved in the fight against jihadists in the Sahel country.

A group of 15 Western powers have expressed anger that Russian mercenaries working for the controversial Wagner group had started to deploy in Mali, accusing Moscow of providing material backing for the fighters.

The nations involved in the fight against a jihadist insurgency in Mali, including Canada, Germany, France and Britain, said they "firmly condemn the deployment of mercenary troops on Malian territory".

There has been growing concern over the situation in Mali under transitional leader Colonel Assimi Goita who took office in June after the country's second coup in less than a year and in particular over fears a commitment to hold elections in February is slipping.

Mali is the epicentre of a jihadist insurgency that began in the north of the country in 2012 and spread three years later to neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso.

France intervened in 2013 and now has roughly 5,000 troops in the region, but plans to lower that number to 2,500-3,000 by 2023.

Citing security reasons, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked telecom operators and internet service providers (ISPs) to maintain call data or internet usage records for two years, instead of one year.

The amendments in the licences were issued on December 21 and extended to other forms of telecom permits on December 22.

Earlier, the rules mandated the archive call data and internet usage records for at least one year. The amendment mandates these service providers maintain internet data records of subscribers including login and logout details for services provided, such as internet access, e-mail, internet telephony services like calls made from mobile applications or Wi-Fi calling for at least two years.The telecom companies may destroy the data stored thereafter if there is no direction from the DoT, reads the circular.

The amendment is necessary in public interest or in the interest of the security of the state or for the proper conduct of telegraphs.

PM announces booster shots for front line workers, 60-plus population; vaccination also to begin for 15-18 age group

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Dec 25 announced precautionary additional Covid19 vaccine doses for healthcare and frontline workers across India, saying that they may be at a higher risk of contracting infection in case there is a surge of infection, in the wake of threat from the Omicron variant.

Administration of vaccine for this group of population, estimated to be around 3-4 crore in number, will begin on January 10.

He also announced that beginning January 3, adolescents aged 15-18 years will be eligible for Covid19 vaccination.

Additionally, people aged 60 and above with comorbidities will also be eligible for booster or additional shots of Covid19 vaccine, on their doctor’s advice, starting January 10.

The mega announcements by the PM come even though the country’s top advisory panel on immunization was yet to give its final recommendation on booster doses or vaccination for kids.

The decision, said the PM, had been taken by the government in the interest of people at large.
Modi also said that a nasal vaccine against Covid19 is on the cards in India, apart from world’s first DNA vaccine (ZyCov D by Zydus Cadila) against Covid19

Centre imposes stock limits on soyameal till June 2022 to check price rise

The Centre on Dec 25 imposed stock holding limits on soyameal, which is used as a raw material in the poultry feed industry, till June 2022 to curb hoarding as well as check price rise.

The limits will be in place till June 30, 2022 and an order in this regard was issued with effect from December 23.

Besides, the government has notified an order under the Essential Commodities Act to declare 'soyameal' as an essential commodity up to June 30, 2022 by amending the Schedule of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

Soyameal processors, millers and plant owners can hold a maximum stock of 90 days production and they are required to declare the storage location.

Government-registered trading companies, traders and private chaupals can hold a maximum stock of 160 tonne with a defined and declared storage location.
