A day after announcing COVID-19 assistance for the newspaper hawkers, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Dec 24 launched the direct cash benefits for 1.1 lakh street vendors across 114 urban centres in the state.

Each street vendor in towns will get Rs 3,000 as COVID-19 assistance

The street vendors had earlier received Rs 6,000 each in two phases in March 2020 and June 2021

The CM on Dec 23 had announced special Covid assistance for newspaper hawkers in the state.

Under the scheme, each registered hawker will get an assistance of Rs 6,000 which will benefit around 7000 registered hawkers across the state.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope soared from French Guiana on South America’s northeastern coast, riding a European Ariane rocket into the Christmas morning sky.

The $10 billion observatory hurtled toward its destination 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometres) away, or more than four times beyond the moon. It will take a month to get there and another five months before its infrared eyes are ready to start scanning the cosmos.

Intended as a successor to the ageing Hubble Space Telescope, the long-delayed James Webb is named after NASA’s administrator during the 1960s. NASA partnered with the European and Canadian space agencies to build and launch the new 7-ton telescope, with thousands of people from 29 countries working on it since the 1990s.

Japan introduces world's first dual-mode vehicle that can run on roads and tracks

The world's first dual-mode vehicle has hit the ground on Dec 25 in the town of Kaiyo, Japan. It is said that the vehicle can run on roads as well as rail tracks.

The DMV looks like a minibus and runs on normal rubber tyres on the road. What makes this vehicle different from the rest is, it also has steel wheels in its underbelly which descend when it hits the rail tracks.

The front tyres are lifted off the track and the rear wheels stay down to propel the DMV onto the railway. This feature of effectively changing into a train-like module easily on a rail track is the first of its kind.

According to reports, the DMV can carry upto 21 passengers and runs at a speed of 60km/h on rail tracks and can go as fast as around 100km/h on public roads.

Airport and infrastructure major GMR Group has signed shareholders agreement with Indonesia’s Angkasa Pura II for the development of Medan Airport.

With this agreement, GMR enters into 49:51 partnership with AP II, the state-owned enterprise and the bidding authority for the Kualanamu International Airport.

The project scope includes operation, development and expansion of the airport over a period of 25 years. Kualanamu International Airport handled more than 10 million passengers in 2018.

Back in home, GMR has received NCLT nod for the restructuring plan involving the demerger of the non-airport business.

Centre approves construction of 1.07 lakh houses in 5 states under PMAY(U)

The Union government has approved the construction of 1.07 lakh houses in five states, including Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban.

The approval was given by the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) chaired by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Durga Shanker Mishra.

The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said project proposals for 1.07 lakh houses were approved for construction from Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Uttarakhand under various verticals of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

The ministry said the total number of sanctioned houses under the mission is now 1.14 crore, of which around 91 lakh have been grounded for construction and more than 53 lakh have been completed and delivered to the beneficiaries.

The total investment under the mission is Rs 7.52 lakh crore with central assistance of Rs 1.85 lakh crore. So far, central assistance amounting to Rs 1.14 lakh crore has already been released. The Housing and Urban Affairs secretary directed the states and Union territories to expedite the construction of houses, adding that grounding should be the first responsibility of states and UTs.

Intel apologises for asking suppliers to avoid Xinjiang

Intel Corp. apologised on Dec 23 for asking suppliers to avoid sourcing goods from Xinjiang after the chipmaker became the latest foreign brand to face the fury of state media regarding the region, where the ruling Communist Party is accused of widespread abuses.

The company, in a statement on its social media account, said the reference to Xinjiang in a letter sent to suppliers was aimed at complying with U.S. regulations.

Washington has barred imports of goods from Xinjiang over complaints of mass detentions of mostly Muslim minorities, forced abortions and other abuses in the northwestern region.

State media and comments on Chinese websites criticised Intel for what Global Times, a newspaper published by the ruling party, called its “arrogant and vicious move.”

Some called for a boycott of Intel products.

Other companies including retailer H&M and shoe brand Nike have been targeted for criticism and calls for boycotts after expressing concern about Xinjiang or saying they would stop using materials produced there.

Pop singer Wang Junkai, also known as Karry Wang, announced that he was pulling out of a deal to act as “brand ambassador” for Intel's Core line of processor chips.

Wang joined a series of Chinese singers, actors and other celebrities who have broke ties with foreign brands over Xinjiang, giving up millions of dollars in income to avoid retaliation by the ruling party.
