India regained the top spot with a 3-2 win over South Korea in the final match on Aug 7 . Coming into the match already assured of a place in one of the semifinals on Aug 11 , they signalled their intentions straightaway as Nilakanta Sharma swept home a finish from close range after good work from Sukhjeet Singh.

But the visitors hit back through Sunghyun Kim six minutes later. The defending champions were proving to be dogged opponents but India remained patient. Soon enough they restored their advantage, captain Harmanpreet Singh sounding the board from the top of the D. Harmanpreet, though, missed a stroke after Mandeep Singh continued his recent form with a field goal. Sunrisers Hyderabad announced the appointment of Daniel Vettori as their head coach, snapping the alliance with Brian Lara that lasted two seasons.

This will be former New Zealand captain Vettori's second coaching stint in the IPL as he had earlier coached Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2018.

Vettori has also worked as Australia men's team's assistant coach recently, and he also had a stint with Bangladesh as a spin consultant.

Vettori, a left-arm spinner of repute, is currently coaching Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred.

During his stint with RCB, Vettori had guided them to IPL play-offs in 2015 and final in 2016.

The demolition drive in Haryana's Nuh where communal violence erupted last week was halted  on Aug 7  on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The High Court restrained the Haryana government from carrying out the demolition drive in Nuh where district authorities were bulldozing "illegal" constructed buildings.

They also said that some of the buildings were used by rioters when a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession was targeted by a stone-pelting mob last week.

Renowned folk singer and balladeer Gaddar, who was popularly known for his revolutionary songs during the 1980s and later during the Telangana statehood agitation, passed away due to ill-health. He was 77.

Gaddar, whose real name is Gummadi Vittal Rao.

Gaddar, who played a key role in spreading public awareness on various issues, gave an impetus to the Telangana statehood agitation with his songs.

A former naxalite, Gaddar had led an underground life, including in the forests.

Subsequently, he had joined the mainstream and voted for the first time in his life in the Telangana Legislative Assembly polls in 2018.

A court  has extended the police remand of Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable Chetan Singh till August 7 for allegedly shooting dead his senior colleague and three passengers on a moving train.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) sought the extension of his custody for seven days, saying they need to identify the witnesses and scan CCTV footage.

The magistrate, however, granted Singh's custody to the police till August 11.

The GRP has added Indian Penal Code section 153-A, for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, in the case against Singh.

The incident took place on July 31 on board the moving Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express near Palghar railway station in Maharashtra.

Accused constable Chetan Singh (34) allegedly shot dead his senior - RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector Tikaram Meena - and three passengers on board the train.

The recent increase in tomato price is due to crop seasonality, white fly disease in Karnataka, fast spread of monsoon in North India and logistical disruption due to heavy rains, the Centre told Parliament in response to a question by MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy.

The exchange comes in the wake of a steep increase in the price of some food items, particularly tomato, over the last several weeks.

The price of tomato, which used to be in the range of Rs 30-40 per kg, shot up to Rs 100-150 in most cities over the last three weeks. while this has led to windfall gains for farmers, it has brought tears to consumers' eyes.

However, tomato was not the only food item to see a sharp run-up in prices in recent days, with pulses also seeing an increase -- though less spectacular -- in their prices.

However, said finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the prices of pulses -- the most widely consumed vegetarian food item in India after foodgrains -- rose "because of lower production".

She said the increase in prices was not because of a proportionate increase in the cost of agricultural inputs.
