Reliance Industries Ltd, India's most valuable company, has sought shareholders' approval to give Mukesh Ambani another five-year term as chairman and managing director of the company till 2029 -- a period during which he has opted to draw nil salary.

Ambani, 66, will cross the company law-mandated 70 years age for the chief executive of the company and requires a special resolution by the shareholders for him to be appointed beyond that age bar.

In a special resolution, Reliance sought the nod of shareholders to appoint Ambani as the head of the company till April 2029.

Ambani has been on the board of Reliance since 1977 and was elevated as chairman of the company after the death of his father and group patriarch Dhiburhai Ambani in July 2002.

In a big relief to consumers and big laptop manufactures, the government has deferred import restrictions on laptops, all-in-one personal computers, and tablets. As per the guidelines provided by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), the import of these devices can be carried out without requiring a valid licence until October 31.

This means the mandatory requirement of licence for bulk imports of computers, laptops and tablets would come into effect from November 1, 2023. The government has announced restrictions on imports of computers, laptops and tablets in order to give a boost to local manufacturing. However, the decision created a lot of concerns over potential disruption in the supply of these goods during the festive season when significant sales of electronic items take place. There were also concerns that prices will shoot up ahead of the festive season.

Earlier, the officials from the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (Meity) had said there will be no disruption to goods in transit, and that tech companies will get sufficient time to apply for the license, and it can easily be applied online.

The Indian women's compound team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur created history by winning the country's first ever gold medal in the World Archery Championships as the trio beat Mexico in the final  in Berlin.

The Indians won 235-229 against their top-seeded opponents. The trio also opened India's medal account in the championships.

Earlier, India had stunned defending champions Colombia 220-216 in the semifinals after a 228-226 win over Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.

This is the first time India's archers have become world champions after the country made its World Archery Championships debut in Punta Ala (Italy) in 1981.

India had previously lost in the finals of the World Archery Championships four times in the recurve section and five times in the non-Olympic compound discipline.

The 17-year-old Aditi, who recently became U-18 world champion, is the juniormost member of the team.

India had last time won a medal in recurve discipline of the World Archery Championships in the 2019 edition in Den Bosch Netherlands when the men's team of Tarundeep Rai, Atanu Das and Pravin Jadhav had settled for a silver.

Indian archer Aditi Gopichand Swami made history on Aug 6 , giving India its first-ever individual gold medal in the history of the World Archery Championships at the ongoing edition of the tournament in Berlin.

Aditi, who is a Khelo India athlete earned the title of 'World Champion' in the women's individual compound archery by defeating Mexico's Andrea Beccera in the final by 149-147 in a thrilling title clash.

This comes after the Indian women's compound team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur and Aditi Gopichand Swami bagged the gold medal at the World Archery Championships 2023 in Berlin.

It was India’s first-ever gold at the archery world championships in any category.

In the gold medal final, the Indian three defeated the Mexican combination of Dafne Quintero, Ana Sofa Hernandez Jeon, and Andrea Becerra 235-229.

The Indian three, placed second in the qualification round, defeated defending champions Colombia 220-216 in the semi-finals to go to the title match.

India has now won a total of 13 medals at the World Archery Championships, including two golds, nine silver and two bronze medals.

Chess legend Viswanathan Anand  has described 17-year-old Grandmaster D Gukesh overtaking him as the highest-rated Indian player in FIDE rankings as a "historic" achievement and said the teenager is spearheading the country's rise in the sport.

Gukesh posted a win over Azerbaijan's Misratdin Iskandarov in a second round match of the World Cup in Baku to overtake his idol Anand in the live world (FIDE) rankings.

Anand, who first made it to the world's top 10 in July 1991, has remained India's top-ranked player in all published lists since January 1987.

The Lok Sabha  on Aug 4  passed a Bill seeking to entrust the management accountability of the IIMs with the President, who will be a Visitor and have powers to audit their functioning, remove directors and nominate a member in the selection committee.

Piloting the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2023, in the Lower House, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the government has no intention to take away the academic accountability from the institute but the Bill will only ensure its management accountability as the Centre has spent over Rs 6,000 crore in setting up the IIMs.

Under the existing dispensation, the President of India is also a visitor at IITs and NITs, but no questions are being raised on the academic autonomy of these institutes, Pradhan said.

The Bill, which was introduced on July 28, was passed by the Lower House by a voice vote amid disruptions by opposition members over the recent violence in Manipur.

According to the Bill, which seeks to amend the IIM Act of 2017, the President will be a Visitor to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) with powers to audit their functioning, order probes and appoint as well as remove directors.

Under the IIM Act, which came into force in January 2018 and granted the premier B-schools greater autonomy, the board of governors of each institute has 19 members which includes just one representative each from the central and state governments.

The board nominates its remaining 17 members from among eminent personalities, faculty and alumni.

It also appoints the search panels for the appointment of new directors and chairpersons, and later, makes the appointments if it agrees with the search panels' recommendations.

A Delhi Court  has granted anticipatory bail to senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The case relates to the Pul Bangash killings during the riots that broke out following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Vikas Dhull, while allowing his plea, ordered Tytler to furnish a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh and directed him not to tamper with evidence.
