Riyad Mahrez is the latest Premier League player to head to Saudi Arabia after signing with Al-Ahli. City agreed a fee understood to be worth up to USD 38.6 million with Al-Ahli last week.

The Algeria international was a key player in Leicester's shocking title win in 2016 and then won the league four more times with Manchester City.

He leaves after a season in which City won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Mahrez scored 15 goals in 47 games in his final season with City but no longer started some of the biggest matches.

He was an unused substitute in both the Champions League and FA Cup finals.

At Al-Ahli, he will join Roberto Firmino, who was formerly one of City's rivals at Liverpool, and former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Bayern Munich announced that Senegalese striker Sadio Mane was in talks "about a change of club" with reports suggesting he was destined for Saudi side Al Nassr.

The German champions left Mane out of a friendly match in Tokyo, posting on social media: "Sadio Mane is in contract negotiations about a change of club and is therefore not in the line-up today."

The 31-year-old former Liverpool star is expected to become the latest high-profile player to join the cash-rich Saudi league.

"The world is witnessing Industry 4.0 revolution today" said Prime Minister Modi at the SemiconIndia Conference in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. He added that because of the nation's rapid expansion in the digital and electronics industries, India is emerging as a major conduit for investments in the semiconductor industry.

The ‘Semicon India 2023’, is an exhibition-cum-conference organized at the Mahatma Mandir convention center  by India Semiconductor Mission in partnership with industry and industry associations. PM Modi inaugurated the event and also addressed the gathering.

Educationist Prof. Ganesan Kannabiran has been appointed as the new Director of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

NAAC stated that Prof Kannabiran has taken charge as director from July 28 onwards.

An alumnus and senior professor of Information Systems at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchy, he has over 30 years of experience in teaching, research and administration. He has a special focus on entrepreneurship and skill development.

Prof Kannabiran was also the founding director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Andhra Pradesh, from 2018 to 2023. During his time as the director, he had made significant contributions towards the implementation of the National Education Policy at the institute, and in promoting the adoption of neighbouring villages.

Prof. Kannabiran is a recipient of the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship (Edinburgh Napier University, UK-2015), Two Fulbright Fellowships (Education Administrators Programme-2011, Fulbright Visiting Lecturer at Oklahoma State University-2015), and British Council Study Fellowship (Huddersfield University UK-1997). He served as the National Expert for an international research study supported by Asian Productivity Organization on Measuring Productivity in Higher Education.

The general who led a coup in Niger took to state television to ask for support for the takeover, two days after members of the military detained the democratically elected president and set off political chaos that could set back the nation's fight against jihadists and increase Russia’s influence in West Africa.

As Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani spoke, Niger state television identified him as the leader of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Country, the group of soldiers who said they staged the coup.

Tchiani, who goes by Omar, said the country needed to change course to avoid “the gradual and inevitable demise” and thus he and others had decided to intervene.

Earlier, various factions of Niger’s military wrangled for power, according to an analyst and a Western military official. Tchiani's appearance seemed to be an effort to show he was in charge, though the situation was still in flux.

A UK-based Indian-origin women's group organised a silent protest march  in London  to register their protest against the violence in Manipur.

The Women of North East India Support Network (WNESN) organised a group of men and women in face masks to signify silence and carried placards outside the Indian High Commission in London.

The group then marched towards Parliament Square to conclude their protest at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi opposite the House of Parliament complex.

The group was formed in 2020 during the pandemic as a community-based women's support network.

The lower House of Parliament  has passed Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023, to enable ease of doing business by decriminalising minor offences by amending 183 provisions in 42 central acts administered by 19 ministries.

The Bill proposes to do away with provisions entailing imprisonment and fines. All offences under the post office act, 1898 have been proposed to be removed.  Commerce minister Piyush Goyal while moving the Bill in Lok Sabha said nearly 40,000 provisions and procedures, which had the possibility of creating hurdles for people were either simplified or removed by the Modi-led government over the last nine years.
