Sales of medicines from the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) across India have jumped 38 per cent to Rs 1236.17 crore in the 2022-23 financial year.

During the 2021-22 financial year, PMBJKs had achieved sales of Rs 893.56 crore.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, 9512 PMBJKs have been opened across the country till June 30.

The government has set a target to open 10,000 PMBJKs by March 2024, said Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Bhagwanth Khuba.

The state with the most PMBJKs is Uttar Pradesh with 1349 followed by Karnataka with 1084, Kerala with 979 and Tamil Nadu with 910.

The scheme, which was launched in November 2008, offers 1759 medicines and 280 surgical devices at affordable prices.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  inaugurated an international airport near Rajkot city in Gujarat.

It is the first greenfield airport in the state and has been built at a cost of Rs 1,405 crore, a government release said.

The facility, located in Hirasar village, around 30 km from Rajkot, is spread over an area of 1,025.50 hectares (2,534 acres), out of which the Airports Authority of India has constructed the airport in an area of 1,500 acres, it said.

It has a 3,040 metre (3.04 km)-long and 45-meter-wide runway where 14 planes can be parked at any given point, a government release said.

In October 2017, Modi performed the ground-breaking ceremony of the international airport at the Hirasar village near Rajkot City.

On Jul 27 , Supreme Court extended the tenure of ED Director SK Mishra till September 15, 2023.

A three-judge bench led by Justice BR Gavai allowed the extension and said there won't be any more extensions. Justice Gavai said that Mishra would cease to be ED director at midnight of 15-16 September. 

In a significant development, the lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir has allowed the Shia community to take out the eighth Muharram procession in Srinagar after a gap of 33 years.

Kashmir divisional commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri confirmed the government decision.

Srinagar deputy commissioner Muhammad Aijaz Asad, while issuing a formal order, said the participants must not indulge in any anti-national, anti-establishment speeches, sloganeering or propaganda, and resort to no activity that shall in any way affect the communal and sectarian harmony or hurt religious, ethnic, cultural and regional sentiments.

This is the first time since 1989 that authorities have allowed the 8th Muharram procession of the Shia community in Srinagar. It, however, remains to be seen whether the 10th Muharram procession will also be allowed. The 8th and 10th Muharram processions were banned after the eruption of militancy in 1989.

India protested  China’s practice to continue to issue separate visas that are stapled onto passports of Indian citizens from the northeastern Arunachal Pradesh state, which China claims to be part of its South Tibet.

Three members of an Indian sports team set to compete at the World University Games this week in China were denied regular visas — which are stamped onto passports — by the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi.

Instead, they got their visas stapled to a page in their passports. For India, that presents a problem because if it sends athletes with stapled visas to China, it would imply accepting China’s claim on the territory.

There was no immediate comment from Beijing but China has insisted the decision to issue stapled visas does not undermine its position on the disputed territory.

In 2011, the Chinese Embassy issued stapled visas to five karate players from Arunachal Pradesh state for a championship in the Chinese city of Quanghou. In 2013, two young archers were stopped from taking part in the Youth World Archery Championship for the same reason.

On the ground, the so-called Line of Actual Control separates Chinese and Indian-held territories, from the region of Ladakh in the west to India’s eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims in its entirety. India and China fought a war over their border in 1962.

Ghana's parliament has voted to abolish the death penalty, joining a long list of African countries that have done so in recent years.

The bill to amend the Criminal Offences Act was put forward by MP Francis-Xavier Sosu and had the backing of the parliament's Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs .

The country currently has 170 men and six women on death row, whose sentences will now be replaced by life imprisonment. The last execution took place in 1993.

Execution has been the mandatory sentence for murder in Ghana.
