A sixth suspect in the Manipur viral video case was arrested  in connection with the May 4 naked parading and molestation of two tribal women in the Kangpokpi district.

Police arrested the sixth suspect from the Thoubal district. Five suspects, including a juvenile, were arrested earlier. Four of those have been sent to 11-day police remand.

Police had made the first arrest on  Jul 20 , a day after a 26-second video of the horrific incident surfaced on July 19. Three more arrests were made later that day. The fifth accused, 19-year-old youth, was also arrested. One of the women seen in the video is the wife of an ex-army man, who served as a subedar in the Assam Regiment and had even fought in the Kargil War.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has   arrested IAS officer Ranu Sahu in Chhattisgarh, a day after the central agency conducted raids at her premises in connection with a money laundering case.

She is the second IAS officer in the state to be arrested in the case.

Sahu, a Chhattisgarh-cadre IAS officer of the 2010 batch, is currently posted as the director of the state agriculture department. Prior to this posting, she had served as collector of the coal-rich Korba and Raigarh districts.

The ED conducted raids at her residence in Raipur . Her premises were raided earlier as well and her assets were attached by the ED as part of its probe into the alleged coal levy case.

This is the second IAS officer in the state who has been arrested in the case as Sameer Vishnoi, an IAS officer of the 2009 batch, was arrested last year.

The agency has been probing an alleged coal levy and liquor scam in the state in which it has arrested some prominent bureaucrats, apart from politicians and those linked to them.

The Indian Railways said  that it equipped more than a hundred locomotives with the anti-collision devices called ‘Kavach’, especially in the South Central Railway route where the horrific triple-train mishap at Balasore in Odisha had occurred on June 2.

Kavach is an indigenously developed automatic train protection system. Its first trials on the passenger trains were held in 2016.

The Kavach system had recently come into prominence in the wake of horrific the triple train mishap that occurred in Odisha’s Balasore.

Union Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to the Upper House said that three firms were approved in 2018-19 for supplying Kavach. After receiving these devices, the Railway adopted a National ATP system in 2020.

Kavach devices have been installed in 121 locomotives (including electric multiple unit rakes) on different routes of South Central Railway (SCR) covering a distance of 1465 route km of the same zone.

President Joe Biden has  announced he will nominate Admiral Lisa Franchetti to lead the US Navy, which would make her the first woman to hold the position and to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

But it is unclear if the Senate will confirm her by the time her predecessor leaves office, as a Republican lawmaker is stalling more than 200 senior military nominations to protest the Pentagon's decision to assist troops who have to travel to receive abortions.

She is the second woman ever to achieve the rank of four-star admiral in the United States Navy, and when confirmed, she will again make history as the first woman to serve as the Chief of Naval Operations and on the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Franchetti has served on a series of surface vessels, commanding a guided missile destroyer, a destroyer squadron and two carrier strike groups.

She was deputy commander of US naval forces in Europe and as well as in Africa, and deputy chief of naval operations for warfighting development, among other positions. She became vice chief of naval operations in September 2022.

Admiral Mike Gilday is due to complete his four-year term as head of the Navy next month, but Franchetti's confirmation will likely be held up by Senator Tommy Tuberville, who has been delaying the approval of military nominees for months.

Tony Bennett, the last in a generation of classic American crooners whose ceaselessly cheery spirit bridged generations to make him a hitmaker across seven decades, died  in New York. He was 96.

Raised in an era when big bands defined US pop music, Bennett achieved an improbable second act when he started winning over young audiences in the 1990s -- not by reinventing himself but by demonstrating his sheer joy in belting out the standards.

At age 88, Bennett in 2014 became the oldest person ever to reach number one on the US album chart through a collection of duets with Lady Gaga, who became his friend and touring companion as younger stars rushed to work with the singing great.

Private lender Yes Bank has  reported a 10% rise in net profit to Rs 343 crore in the quarter ended June this year compared to Rs 311 crore in the same quarter previous year, mainly supported by healthy growth in non-interest income.

The company’s non-interest income soared 54% to Rs 1,141 crore during the quarter, while net interest income rose 8.1% to Rs 2,000 crore during the quarter.

Surge in provisions slowed the pace of growth in profit as the lender’s provisions and contingencies, net of recoveries made against loan accounts written off as bad, more than doubled to Rs 360 crore from Rs 175 crore a year earlier.

Kotak Mahindra Bank, the country’s fourth largest private lender, has  announced a 67% rise in net profit to Rs 3,452 crore for the quarter that ended June, helped by higher interest income. Net interest income, the difference between interest earned and interest paid, surged 33 per cent Rs 6,234 crore during the quarter compared to Rs 4,697 crore in the same quarter the previous year.

The grounded carrier, Go First, may chart history and become the first airline to bounce back after suspending operations as the country’s civil aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has conditionally accepted its resumption plan which was submitted late last month. 

The regulator has set conditions such as making interim funding available for operations and getting its flight schedule approved to resume operations. DGCA has approved Go First’s plan to restart operations with 15 aircraft and 114 daily flights.

DGCA has directed the airline to ensure compliance with all the “applicable regulatory requirements, ensure the continued airworthiness of the aircraft engaged in operations and subjecting every aircraft to a satisfactory handling flight prior to deployment for flight operations.” It also said the sale of tickets can be only commenced after the approval of the flight schedule by the regulator.

DGCA conducted a special audit of Go First facilities in Mumbai and Delhi from 4th to 6th July 2023. The audit focused on the safety-related aspects and continued compliance of the requirements by an operator to hold an Air Operator Certificate as well as on the physical verification of the arrangements made for the resumption of flight operations.

Cash-strapped Go First stopped flying on May 3 and is currently going through an insolvency resolution process.
