None of the Indian cities have made it to the top 100 of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Best Student Cities 2024 survey that showcases the best student-friendly destinations for international students.

While Mumbai ranked 118, the highest among Indian cities, Delhi stood at 132 positions. It is followed by Bengaluru at 147 and then Chennai at 154.

London, however, continues to be in the top position in the ‘World University Rankings’. The other top cities are Tokyo, Seoul, Melbourne, Munich, Paris, Sydney, Berlin, Zurich and Boston.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) said  it has formally directed Twitter India to remove a video that shows the "disgraceful act" of two women being paraded naked and assaulted in the violence-hit Manipur.

Police in Manipur said a case of abduction, gang rape and murder has been registered at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district against unidentified armed persons.

An Indian-origin police officer went on trial in Singapore for his role in the death of a maid from Myanmar for which his former wife and mother-in-law are already serving long-term jail sentences.

Kevin Chelvam, 44, the registered employer of Myanmar national Piang Ngaih Don, 24, who died following prolonged and heinous abuse while under his employment, claimed trial to four charges, The Straits Times newspaper reported.

Piang Don started working for Chelvam's family in May 2015 and died on July 26, 2016. She just weighed 24 kg at the time of her death.

His charges include voluntarily causing hurt and abetment of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to Piang Don by starvation.

Chelvam was suspended from the police force in August 2016, days after Piang Ngaih Don's death.

Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has ordered the attachment of bank and demat accounts as well as mutual fund holdings of Venugopal Dhoot, founder of Videocon Group to recover dues totalling Rs 5.16 lakh.

The decision comes after Dhoot failed to pay the fine imposed on him in March by Sebi for not making disclosures about his interest in Supreme Energy as well as for not disclosing that Quality Techno Advisors Pvt Ltd (QTAPL) and Credential Finance Ltd (CFL) were related parties with respect to certain transactions.

To recover the dues, Sebi asked all banks, depositories - CDSL and NSDL - and mutual funds to not allow any debit from the accounts of Dhoot. However, credits have been permitted. The market regulator has directed banks to attach all accounts, including lockers, held by the defaulter.

In March, Sebi imposed Rs 5 lakh fine on Dhoot after finding that he did not disclose his interest (99.9 per cent shares) in Supreme Energy Pvt Ltd (SEPL) to Videocon Industries, at the time of grant of loan by the company to SEPL. In addition, Dhoot did not disclose his interest in CFL and QTAPL.

The Indian men's football team  has achieved sub-100 FIFA ranking for the first time since 2018 as it moved up one spot to 99th after its SAFF Championship triumph.

India had beaten strong teams Lebanon and Kuwait in penalty shoot-outs in the semifinal and final respectively in the SAFF Championships in Bengaluru earlier this month.

Lebanon also gained two places to be just below India at 100th spot while Kuwait moved up four places to be at 137th in the latest FIFA chart issued on  Jul 20 .

The country had also reached 99th spot in 1993 and 96th in 2017 and 2018.

It was placed at 100th last month.

Overall, world champions Argentina continued to be at the top, followed by France, Brazil, England and Belgium.

In Asia, Japan led the chart at 20th spot, followed by Iran (22), Australia (27), Korea (28) and Saudi Arabia (54) in top five.

To revive and preserve the 2000-year-old technique of shipbuilding known as the ‘stitched shipbuilding method’, the Ministry of Culture and the Indian Navy have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The Indian Navy will oversee the implementation and execution of the entire project. As custodians of maritime security and experts in the field, the Indian Navy's involvement ensures seamless project management and adherence to the highest standards of safety and precision.

The stitched ship holds significant cultural value in India, given its historical importance and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship. Throughout history, India has had a strong maritime tradition, and the use of stitched ships played a vital role in trade, cultural exchange, and exploration. These ships, constructed by stitching wooden planks together rather than using nails, offered flexibility and durability, making them less susceptible to damage from shoals and sandbars. Although the arrival of European ships led to a shift in shipbuilding techniques, the art of stitching ships has survived in a few coastal regions of India, primarily for small local fishing boats.

The MoU signing ceremony  was graced by the presence of the senior officials of the minister Govind Mohan (secretary), Uma Nanduri, (joint secretary), Priyanka Chandra, (director), Rear Admiral K. Srinivas, and Commodore Sujeet Bakshi, Commander Sandeep Roy from the Indian Navy.

The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of an alleged incident of women being paraded naked in Manipur and asked the state police chief to take prompt action in the matter.
