Chennai Super Kings beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets in a nail-biting run chase to be crowned as the champions of IPL 2023.

The win marks the Super Kings' fifth IPL title — equaling the record for most titles set by arch-rivals Mumbai Indians — in what could turn out to be the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni's final outing in the T20 league.

Chennai chased down their revised target of 171 in 15 overs with five wickets to spare in a rain-hit IPL final which went past 1.30 am local time on a reserve day following a washout on May 28.

Chelsea hired Mauricio Pochettino as manager, tasking the Argentine coach with getting the best out of an expensively assembled squad that has underperformed at the start of a new era for the English club.

Pochettino will take up the role on July 1, Chelsea said, after agreeing to a two-year contract, with the club having the option of keeping him on for a further year.

It is Pochettino's first coaching role since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July last year and marks his return to the Premier League, where he had an impressive 5 1/2-year spell with Tottenham that included a run to the Champions League final.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off Assam's first Vande Bharat Express at 12 noon on June 5 via video-conferencing) .

The state-of-the-art train will provide the people of the region with the means to travel with speed and comfort. It will also boost tourism in the region.

Connecting Guwahati with New Jalpaiguri, the train will help save about an hour of journey time, compared to the current fastest train connecting the two places.

Vande Bharat will cover the journey in five-and-a-half hours, while the current fastest train takes about six-and-a-half hours to cover the distance. Modi will also dedicate 182 route kilometres of newly-electrified sections.

This will help provide pollution-free transportation with trains running at a higher speed and reduced running time. It will also open the doors for trains running on electric traction to enter Meghalaya.

The prime minister will inaugurate a newly-constructed DEMU/MEMU shed at Assam's Lumding.

This new facility will be helpful for maintaining the DEMU rakes operating in the region, leading to better operational feasibility. The Indian Railways is currently running 34 services of the train, covering 21 states. It has set a target of running at least one service in seven more states by June.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on May 29  successfully placed NVS-01, a second-generation navigation satellite, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR in Sriharikota.

The national space agency is expanding its regional satellite navigation system - NavIC - with the addition of more powerful and reliable navigation satellites. The first satellite in the new series was launched using a GSLV-F12 rocket. Officials said four more are under production.

These satellites are built with a more operational life of 12 years and incorporate L1 band signals additionally. For the first time, an indigenous atomic clock was flown in NVS-01.

The launch vehicle standing 51.7 metres tall with a mass of 420 tonnes has lifted-off majestically from the second launch pad carrying 2,232 kg payload. The satellite was precisely injected into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit in about 19 minutes. 

ISRO chairman S Somanath declared the mission a success and said the satellite team has taken over to do the subsequent orbit raising maneuvers and to put the satellite into the intended orbit.

The NavIC uses seven satellites to provide real-time positioning and timing services in India and an area extending up to 1,500 km from the country's borders. However, several satellites that were launched between 2013-2018 have become defunct, thereby hampering its operational capabilities. 

According to ISRO, the second-generation navigation satellites will not only ensure continuity of legacy NavIC services, but also provide new service in L1 band.

The L1 navigation band is popular for providing PNT (Position, Navigation and Timing) services for civilian users and for interoperability with other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as GPS (US), Glonass (Russia), Galileo (EU) and BeiDou (China).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the Bori-bandh campaign in Jharkhand’s rebel-hit Khunti district during his ‘Mann ki Baat’ on May 28  for setting up an example that how public participation brings positive change in the society. A detailed report on the initiative was published in ‘The Sunday Standard’ way back in January 2021.

Under this campaign, small dams are constructed by filling sand and soil in used cement bags that are kept on one atop the other to stop water from flowing into the local rivulets. This helps provide water for irrigation throughout the year and also maintains the water- table in the region.

Goan writer Damodar Mauzo has received the prestigious Jnanpith Award, the country's highest literary honour, from state Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai.

Addressing a gathering after presenting the award, the governor said Mauzo is the "epitome of the Konkani literary culture."

Renowned poet Gulzar was present during the function held at the Raj Bhavan near Goa capital Panaji.

Mauzo's 25 books have been published in Konkani and one in English. Many of his books have also been translated in different languages.

Pillai said Konkani is qualitatively rich in its literature though it is spoken by a few lakh people.

Mauzo's famous novel 'Karmelin' received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983. The novel, published in 1981, has been translated in Hindi, Marathi, English, Punjabi, Sindhi, Tamil, Odia and Maithili languages.

Mauzo is the second Goan to receive the Jnanpith Award. Earlier, Ravindra Kelekar from the coastal state got the award in 2008.

While Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who was in Delhi, joined the function online, state Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude and Bharatiya Jnanpith President Justice Virendra Jain were present at the Raj Bhavan during the event.

Ruling Janata Dal (United) in Bihar received a setback following the resignation of a senior leader and former MP Monazir Hasan from the primary membership of the party.

Hasan told media persons that he has sent his resignation letter to the party's national president and MP Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh. A copy of the letter has also been sent to JD(U) supremo and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

He said that people like him were not of much importance to JD(U) and that's why a number of dedicated workers of the party were being neglected by the top leadership.

Hasan also remarked that posts across several government-run organisations meant for the welfare of minority communities were lying vacant for years together. The former MP alleged that people from minority communities were at the receiving end in the state.

The leaders of the grand alliance, including JD(U) and RJD, have exploited them by showing fear of the BJP. In addition, the minority community has not been given due representation in the government, he claimed.

Hasan's resignation may have an adverse impact on the performance of JD(U) in the Munger region. He had won four times from the Munger assembly constituency seat, which comes under Munger Lok Sabha.

The Munger Lok Sabha seat is currently represented by Lalan Singh.

In addition, Hasan had also earlier won from Munger Lok Sabha seat. He was also appointed as a minister twice.
