A Delhi court on May 26  granted a no-objection certificate (NOC) to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for issuance of an 'ordinary passport' for three years instead of 10, the period for which it is normally issued, following an objection raised by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.

The former Congress president had surrendered his diplomatic passport upon his disqualification as an MP.

Gandhi approached the Rouse Avenue Court with his application earlier this week in relation to the new 'ordinary passport'. The Congress leader's disqualification as MP was following his conviction by a Gujarat court in a defamation case linked to his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname.

The former Congress chief is an accused in the National Herald case in which BJP leader Subramanian Swamy is the complainant. The National Herald case, currently under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate, stems from a private complaint lodged by Swamy in 2012.

In order to ensure the safety of children in educational institutions, the UP government on  May 27 issued instructions to all the Basic Education Officers (Basic Shiksha Adhikaris) to adhere to the guidelines set to prevent physical, mental and sexual abuse of children on school premises.

The state government reissued detailed guidelines, prepared in the year 2015, regarding the safety of students. State Project Director Vijay Kiran Anand sent a letter to all district Basic Education Officers to ensure action in this regard.

The German military has ordered 18 new Leopard 2 tanks to replace vehicles that were sent to Ukraine earlier this year

The  leading defence company Kraus-Maffei Wegmann said a contract for the Leopard 2A8 tanks was signed with the federal office for military equipment.

It didn't give financial details, but the German parliament's budget committee  has approved funding of some 525 million euros (USD 563 million).

The company said that delivery of the new tanks is scheduled to start in 2025 and that the deal includes options for another 105 Leopard 2A8 tanks.

Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands also have agreed to provide Ukraine with refurbished Leopard 1 tanks, an older model that the German military hasn't used for two decades.

Belgium and Iran conducted a prisoner exchange in Oman, with officials saying Tehran released a Belgian aid worker in exchange for an Iranian diplomat convicted of attempting to bomb a meeting of exiles in France.

The initial announcement by Oman's Foreign Ministry did not identify the prisoners being swapped. However, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said in a statement that the aid worker, Olivier Vandecasteele, had been freed. Iranian state television later said, in an on-screen graphic, that the diplomat would be freed.

Oman has long served as an interlocutor for the West with Iran.

Tesla Model Y sold 267,200 units globally in the first quarter this year, compared to 256,400 Corolla and 214,700 RAV4 units sold.

The Supreme Court on Nay 26  granted interim medical bail to Delhi's former Health Minister, Satyendar Jain, seeking bail in a money laundering case for six weeks.

A vacation bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and PS Narasimha granted him bail to allow him to take treatment in a private hospital of his choice. Although he has been granted bail the court has directed him to not influence the witnesses, leave GNCTD without court’s leave and also go in any press or media to make any statement on any issue. The court’s order will remain in operation till July 11.

Jain was arrested by the ED in a money laundering case based on an FIR lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He is accused of having laundered money through four companies allegedly linked to him and has been in custody since May last year after the attachment of properties worth Rs 4.81 crore by the ED

Senior IPS officer Praveen Sood took over as the new CBI director on May 25 and he will be in the post for two years.

On his last working day, the outgoing director, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, handed Sood the charge of the agency at its headquarters.

Sood is a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre and was the state's director general of police (DGP). He is the senior-most IPS officer in the country after Jaiswal.

Sood's name was cleared in a meeting of a high-powered committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Chowdhury, a Congress leader, had reportedly given a dissent note on the selection of Sood as the next director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Born in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district in 1964, Sood joined the IPS at the age of 22 years after completing his civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi.

During his 37 years of service, Sood served in various capacities in the Karnataka Police, including superintendent of police of Bellary and Raichur districts; additional commissioner of police (traffic), Bengaluru City; commissioner of police, Mysuru City and Bengaluru City; additional director general of police; principal secretary (home); DGP (Internal Security) and DGP (CID).

The officer, known for his hands-on approach, had supervised the investigation of high-profile cases involving high net-worth individuals and matters having inter-state and international ramifications.

He also supervised probes in areas such as cybercrime and information technology.

The tech-savvy officer had worked for strengthening the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems) and the ICJS (Interoperable Criminal Justice System) in Karnataka along with the judiciary.
