INS Vagir, the fifth submarine of the Kalvari Class submarines, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Jan 23, giving a boost to the force's prowess.

INS Vagir, which has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited with technology transfer from France, was commissioned in a ceremony attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar.

Union Tourism Ministry has finalised 36 destinations for development in the first phase of Swadesh Darshan 2.0, the Centre’s scheme for infrastructure revamp that entails sustainable and responsible tourism.

The ministry has initiated the process to appoint consultants to prepare a master plan for the selected destinations. A detailed project report will spell out the identified interventions. The scheme will be implemented through various agencies for which funds are provided by the Centre.

The appointed Project Development and Management Consultants (PDMC) will support the implementation agencies in the planning, development and management of destinations by providing end-to-end support. Besides planning and designing interventions, the consultant will also ensure successful implementation and management of activities required for development at tourism destinations.

The 36 destinations are from 19 states. The list includes Gandikota (Andhra Pradesh), Kokrajhar (Asaam), Nalanda (Bihar), Chandigarh, Dholavira (Goa), Hampi (Karnataka), Niuland (Nagaland) and Mamallapuram (Tamil Nadu).

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued directions for blocking multiple YouTube videos, which published the first episode of the BBC Documentary “India: The Modi Question”.

The orders were also issued to Twitter for blocking over 50 tweets containing links to YouTube videos.

The directions were issued by the Secretary of Information and Broadcasting ministry on Jan 20 using the emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021.

The ministry of external affairs had earlier termed the documentary produced by British Broadcasting Corporation--United Kingdome's (UK’s) public broadcaster, as a 'propaganda piece' that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset. 

Police in Southern California on  Jan 22 launched a manhunt for an Asian male suspected in a mass shooting that left 10 people dead and 10 others wounded at a dance club during Lunar New Year celebrations.

The "male suspect fled the scene and remains outstanding," Los Angeles County sheriff Robert Luna told a press conference in Monterey Park. He cautioned that the description of the shooter remains preliminary, and he gave no further identifying details.

The gunman opened fire as the local community were celebrating Lunar New Year at the venue in Monterey Park, with witnesses saying he shot indiscriminately with a semiautomatic weapon.

Turkey on  Jan 21 called off a visit by Sweden's defence minister over a planned demonstration by a right-wing extremist in Stockholm.

Turkey has been angered by permission obtained by Rasmus Paludan, a Swedish-Danish politician whose anti-Islamist actions sparked riots across Sweden last year, to stage a protest in front of its embassy in the Swedish capital.

A day after summoning the Swedish ambassador over the issue, Ankara said it was cancelling a visit by Sweden's defence chief that was aimed at overcoming Turkey's objections to Sweden's bid to join the NATO military alliance.
