Public sector lender Union Bank of India on Jan 20  announced 106.81 % increase in net profit to Rs 2,245 crore for the third quarter ending December 2022, supported by rise in net interest income. 

Net interest income, which is the difference between interest earned and interest paid, rose 20 % to Rs 8,628 crore in Q3FY23 as against Rs 7,174 crore in the same quarter last year. The non-interest income rose to Rs 3,271 crore during the quarter, recording a rise of 29.6 %. Total income increased to Rs 24,154 crore in Q3FY23 from Rs 19,454 crore in the year-ago period.

BoM net profit doubles to Rs 775 cr

The state-owned Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) has reported more than two-fold jump in its profit at Rs 775 crore in the quarter ending December 2022 due to increase in net interest income and improved asset quality. The Pune-headquartered public sector bank, which is eyeing a QIP of Rs 500-1,000 crore in the fourth quarter, reported a net profit of Rs 325 crore in the year-ago period.

At a time when the world is staring at recession, the Indian economy will consolidate its position in the global economy.  The size of Indian economy is expected to reach $3.7 trillion during this year, making it the fifth largest economy in the world, said Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bulletin.

As per the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) calculations, India will move into fourth place in 2025 and into third place in 2027 as a $ 5.4 trillion economy, noted the bulletin. On the inflation front, the central bank targets to bring prices further down. It targets to restrict inflation under its tolerance zone of 2-6 % during the current year.

A Pakistani court has handed down over 30 years of rigorous imprisonment to two members of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban (TTP) group , Imran Razik and Saddam Hussein Musa,  for carrying out terrorist activities in the country's Punjab province.

The TTP, also known as the Pakistan Taliban, is believed to have close links to the Al-Qaeda terror group.

Set up as an umbrella group of several militant outfits in 2007, its main aim is to impose its strict brand of Islam across Pakistan.

In a late-night deal struck between the sports ministry and the protesting wrestlers, the government announced the setting up of an oversight committee to examine all the grave charges against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.  The panel will submit its findings in four weeks till which time Singh will step aside and assist it.

After almost seven hours of meeting on Jan 29 , sports minister Anurag Thakur along with the wrestlers announced that the committee to be formed on  Jan 21 will look into the day-to-day matters of the WFI.

Taking cognisance of allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Indian Olympic Association on Jan 20  formed a seven-member committee, headed by M C Mary Kom, to probe the charges.

The allegations have been made by some of the country's top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya.

Besides legendary boxer Mary Kom and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, the panel includes archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav. The committee also has two advocates -- Talish Ray and Shlok Chandra -- besides former shuttler and IOA joint secretary Alaknanda Ashok, who is its vice chairperson.

The decision was taken during the IOA's emergency Executive Council meeting, which was attended by the likes of Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra, Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar, along with IOA president PT Usha and joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey. IOA Athletes Commission Member Shiva Keshvan was a special invitee to the meeting.
