Kim Jung Gi, a world-renowned comic book artist and the creator of the manwha Tiger the Long Tail (TLT), died after suffering a heart attack in Paris. Gi, a South Korean, was 47 years old.

Hours after the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a global alert over four India-made cough syrups linked to the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSO) launched an urgent investigation into the matter.

The cough syrup by New Delhi-based Indian pharmaceutical company Maiden Pharmaceuticals is not sold in India but is being exported.

The WHO on Oct 5 flagged four "contaminated" and "substandard" cough syrups made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited - whose two manufacturing units are based in Haryana, while the corporate office is in Pitampura, New Delhi. WHO said the company, whose website is now unavailable and phones not reachable, failed to guarantee their safety.

The world body also said the syrups have been "potentially linked with acute kidney injuries and 66 deaths among children.”

The four cough and cold syrups are Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup.

The Reserve Bank on  Oct 6 asked Credit Information Companies to appoint internal ombudsman by April 1 next year in order to improve the efficiency of their grievance redressal mechanisms.

The Internal Ombudsman (IO) will not handle complaints received directly from the complainants or members of the public and, instead, deal only with the complaints that have already been examined by the CIC but have been partly or wholly rejected by the CIC, the RBI said in a circular.

In order to make the Reserve Bank-Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS) 2021 more broad based, the central bank in August this year had decided to bring CICs also under the ambit of the scheme.

The RBI had said the move will provide a cost-free alternate redressal mechanism to customers of regulated entities for grievances against CICs.

As per the circular, the internal ombudsman will report to the Managing Director or Chief Executive Officer of the CIC administratively, and to the Board functionally.

The areas relating to customer service and customer grievance redressal will be a part of the supervisory review undertaken by the Reserve Bank.

Further, the Reserve Bank will review the cases where the decision of the IO has not been accepted by the CIC.

Covid-19 has dealt the "biggest setback" to global poverty reduction efforts in decades, and the World Bank warned on Oct 5  that the goal to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030 likely remains out-of-reach.

Poverty rose sharply during the pandemic, and the development lender estimates about 70 million people were pushed into extreme poverty in 2020 -- the biggest one-year spike since monitoring began in 1990.

The report offers the first tally of those struggling to live on less than $2.15 a day, the new global definition of extreme poverty, but follows many warnings from the global development lender that poorer nations are being left behind.

Earlier this year the institution warned that as many 95 million people would fall back into extreme poverty by the end of this year.

War in Ukraine, rising inflation and slowing global growth have put further pressure on the bank's mission to lift people out of poverty.

Global extreme poverty had fallen to 8.4 percent by 2019 from 38 percent in 1990, but the pandemic triggered the first rise in more than two decades.

Amid the setbacks the report projects global extreme poverty rate for 2030 will only fall to seven percent, or nearly 600 million people.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 60 percent of all people in extreme poverty, according to the bank, and history-defying growth rates for the rest of the decade would be needed to hit poverty reduction targets.

The 125th annual general meeting of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry held on  Oct 7 elected Arun David Mookken of Mookken Devassy Ouseph & Company as president and Job V Job of Indian Emporium as its vice-president.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Vikas Agarwal, president of the chamber. Deepak Kumar Shetty, Dr Baiju Ramachandran, Akshay Agarwal, Kurian Jose and Rajesh Agarwal were also elected members of the managing committee.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi said  on Oct 7 that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will "surely" be the last of his career.

Messi, who is due to appear in his fifth World Cup, made his international debut in 2005 and has since won 164 caps for Argentina and is the country's all-time record scorer with 90 goals.

Messi's international debut as a substitute against Hungary in 2005 lasted just two minutes before he was sent off but he quicky established himself in the national team set-up and travelled to Germany for his first World Cup in 2006.

Thanglalsoun Gangte scored a brace to guide India to a crucial 3-0 win over Kuwait in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers on Oct 6.

India had registered a commanding 5-0 win against the Maldives in their previous match.

Two goals from Gangte gave the Indian side three points.
