Congress suffered another blow a day before Rahul Gandhi‘s  on Sep 5 Gujarat visit with state Youth Congress president Vishwanathsinh Vaghela resigning from the party.

Following his exit, he alleged that the former national president is surrounded by flatterers while suffering a lack of support among senior leaders.

Vaghela is considered a close ally of former working president of Gujarat Congress, Hardik Patel.

India recorded over 1.64 lakh deaths due to suicides in 2021 — an average of nearly 450 daily or 18 every hour, with the figures reaching the highest for any calendar year so far, according to official data.

Of those who died by suicide, there were nearly 1.19 lakh males, 45,026 females and 28 transgenders, data from the National Crime Records Bureau's 'Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India — 2021' report showed.

A sharp rise in such deaths has been noticed in 2020 and 2021 as compared to years before the covid-19 pandemic outbreak, the data suggested.

In 2020, 1.53 lakh deaths by suicide were recorded across the country, according to the data of NCRB, which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The NCRB, has been compiling suicide death data since 1967 when the country had reported 38,829 such fatalities in the calendar year.

It was in 1984 that the number of suicide deaths crossed the 50,000 mark for the first time in the country and it crossed the 75,000 mark in 1991, the official figures from the corresponding time period showed.

However, it was in 1998 that the number of suicide deaths crossed the 1 lakh mark as 1.04 lakh such fatalities were recorded that year, the figures showed.

A series of stabbings at an Indigenous community and at another town nearby in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan left 10 people dead and 15 wounded, Canadian police said on Sep 4  as they searched for two suspects.

The stabbings took place in multiple locations on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the village of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon.

Nearly 1,300 people have been killed so far due to unprecedented floods triggered by record monsoon rains and melting glaciers in Pakistan's northern mountains, as authorities stepped up efforts to contain the spread of water-borne diseases like diarrhoea and malaria in the affected areas.

The cataclysmic floods have inundated a third of the country, displaced more than 33 million and has caused economic damages to the tune of USD 12.5 billion to Pakistan's already teetering economy.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that 492 people have died in Sindh, followed by 286 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, 259 in Balochistan, 188 in Punjab, 42 in Kashmir, 22 in Gilgit-Baltistan and one in Islamabad.

Floods have also destroyed about 5,563 kms of roads and 243 bridges, while 1,468,019 houses were partially or fully damaged and 736,459 livestock killed, it said.The government on August 25 had officially declared a "national emergency" in light of the rain-induced floods which have killed more than 1,200 people.

Over 1.55 lakh updated income tax returns (ITR-U) have been filed up to Sep 2, the income tax department said on Sep 4.

The income tax department had in May this year notified a form for filing updated income tax returns (ITRs).

The taxpayer will have to pay an additional amount over and above the due tax while filing ITR-U.

It said more than 20,000 taxpayers have filed Updated ITRs for both AYs 2020-21 and 2021-22 (2019-20 and 2020-21 fiscal years).

Finance Act 2022 introduced a new provision for filing Updated Income Tax Returns under section 139 (8A) of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

As per the provision, an additional 25 per cent on the due tax and interest would have to be paid, if the updated income tax return (ITR) is filed within 12 months, while the rate will go up to 50 per cent if it is filed after 12 months, but before 24 months from the end of relevant Assessment Year.

The form ITR-U will be available to taxpayers for filing updated income tax returns for 2019-20 and 2020-21 fiscals and taxpayers will have to mention exact reasons for filing it along with the amount of income to be offered to tax.
