The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on  Aug 29 filed a supplementary charge sheet against nine people, including four Afghan nationals, in a case related to the seizure of nearly 3,000 kg of heroin at the Mundra port in Gujarat in September last year.

The charge sheet was filed in a special NIA court in Ahmedabad against the accused, who are members of an international network involved in the smuggling of heroin from Afghanistan to India for further distribution in Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and other states.

The nine accused were identified as Afghan nationals Jannat Gul Kaker, Mujahid Shinwari, Shami Ullah and Mohammad Lal Kaker; Sarabjit Singh alias "Setthi", Balwinder Singh and Jasvir Singh of Punjab; and Imtiaz Ahmad and Imran Ahmad of Uttar Pradesh.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized 2,988 kg of heroin, smuggled from Afghanistan, from a container freight station at the Mundra port in Gujarat on September 13 last year, and registered a case.

The NIA re-registered the case on October 6.

A special CBI court on Aug 29 convicted former JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP Anil Kumar Sahani in the LTC fraud case for attempting to avail travel allowance in 2012 using forged Air India e-tickets without performing journeys.

The CBI during investigation found that Sahani had submitted claims of Rs 23.71 lakh from Rajya Sabha in two sets of TA bills -- one having 20 forged e-tickets and 40 boarding passes in the name of the MP and nine other companions in March 2012, and another bill having seven forged e-tickets and 21 boarding passes in his name and his six companions in December 2012.

The agency said 20 fake e-tickets were for purported return travel on the Delhi-Chennai-Port Blair route while the set of seven fake tickets were for the return journey on the Delhi-Kolkata-Port Blair sector.

An MP is entitled to 34 single air journeys per year, to be availed alone or with spouse or any number of companions or relatives.

Sahani had realised that his quota of travel was not complete so he entered in a criminal conspiracy with others to get fake e-tickets and boarding passes to make the claim without performing the journey.

Former Lok Janshakti Party president Chirag Paswan on Aug 29 asserted that he will not be part of any coalition which included Pashupati Kumar Paras, his rebellious uncle who is enjoying a cabinet berth at the Centre.

Paswan made the comment in response to queries about speculations that he might “return” to the NDA following the exit of his bete noire, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.The young leader who is fighting to retain the legacy of late father Ram Vilas Paswan, however, cryptically added that he was not ruling out the possibility of siding with the RJD which has now aligned with Kumar since “alliances have lost their sanctity in Bihar.

Paswan has been a self-confessed admirer of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and had rebelled against the JD(U) in the 2020 assembly polls in the state, claiming that he wanted to dislodge Kumar from power and help the BJP form its own government.

The BJP, however, stuck with Kumar and appeared to have dumped Paswan when Paras, armed with support of most LJP MPs, split the party floated by the late Ram Vilas Paswan and got inducted into the Union cabinet.

Sri Lanka on Aug 29  said it will privatise the country's loss-making national carrier as the cash-strapped government "can no longer afford to inject money" into running the airline.

The government is looking to sell a 49 per cent stake each of the SriLankan Airlines' catering and ground-handling units in efforts to restructure the state-run carrier, while 51 per cent will be retained under state hold, Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said .

The minister said the revenue from the sale of the catering operation can be used to pay off debt amounting to USD 80 million that was obtained by mortgaging its shares, as well as some other loans.

The airline's debt currently amounts to USD 1.226 billion (LKR 401 billion) .

The airline, formed in 1979 as Air Lanka, was rebranded by Srilankan Airlines under the management control of Emirates in 1998.

In 2007, the government took back control of it from the Emirates.

Srilankan Airlines is among over 190 state-owned enterprises that are making huge losses.

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for much-needed reforms for the loss-making national carrier.

Sri Lanka's Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said that 24 companies from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the United States, China, India, Russia, the UK, Malaysia, Norway and the Philippines have submitted proposals for the Expressions of Interest (EOI) to engage in the country's petroleum sector.

In July, the Ministry of Power and Energy had called for EOI from established companies in petroleum-producing countries to use their funds for the distribution and selling of petroleum products in Sri Lanka on a long-term basis.

A ministry-appointed panel will now evaluate these proposals, issue Requests for Proposals and finalise the process in six weeks.

Pakistan's Finance Minister Miftah Ismail on Aug 29  said the government can consider importing vegetables and other edible items from India following the destruction of standing crops due to massive floods, three years after Islamabad downgraded trade ties with New Delhi over the Kashmir issue.

Pakistan is witnessing a massive surge in the prices of various vegetables and fruits due to devastating floods as the supply of vegetables from Balochistan, Sindh and south Punjab has badly been affected because of the disaster.

Pakistan downgraded its trade relations with India in August 2019 after India's decision to revoke Article 370 which granted a special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

According to officials, floods have claimed over nearly 1,100 lives so far.

An indigenous tribe member, dubbed the “loneliest man in the world” because he lived completely alone in Brazil’s Amazon forests, was found dead.

Called the “Indian of the Hole” because of the large trenches he dug to trap animals or hide in, the last of his unknown tribe died of natural causes.

He was found dead in his hammock in his hut on Aug.24, according to Funai, the government’s indigenous agency.

The Brazilian, whose name and the language he spoke were never known, lived in voluntary isolation in a piece of forest monitored by Funai.

According to La Prensa, he lived on his own and was constantly on the run. The indigenous man was located 26 years ago in the forest in the Rondonia state, near the border with Bolivia, the La Prensa reported.

The agency said it found no traces indicating the presence of other people near the hut.

In the Brazilian jungle, at least 114 indigenous peoples have been identified who live in isolation, avoiding direct contact with non-Indians.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani has said that Reliance Jio will launch its 5G services in many key cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai by Diwali, and by December 2023 will make every town, every taluka and every tehsil of India 5G-enabled.

He said Jio 5G will be the world's largest and most advanced 5G network.

The other Telecom Service Providers(TSPs), Ambani said, are deploying a version of 5G, which is essentially a 5G radio signal that is delivered over their existing 4G infrastructure.

In sharp contrast, Jio will deploy the latest version of 5G -- standalone 5G -- that has absolutely zero dependency on its 4G network.  The RIL chairman said that Jio firmly believes that digital freedom is the birthright of every Indian and therefore 5G cannot remain an exclusive service available only to the privileged few in our largest cities. To ensure this, the company has acquired a coveted 700 MHz band that can provide 6-10 km of signal range in all 22 circles in the country.

The company is also working very closely with all leading global smartphone OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer). To speed up quick 5G deployment in the country, it has also partnered with Qualcomm.
