Public sector lender Bank of India has filed a petition before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), to initiate insolvency proceedings against debt-ridden Future Lifestyle Fashions Ltd (FLFL).

FLFL was part of the 19 group companies operating in retail, wholesale, logistics and warehousing segments, which were supposed to be transferred to Reliance Retail as part of a Rs 24,713 crore deal announced in August 2020.

The deal was called off by the billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd in April, after it failed to get lenders' support of the respective companies.

Following this, the Kishore Biyani-led retail empire is in deep financial trouble. Several lenders have approached NCLT after default.

The NCLT has already initiated CIRP against Future Retail Ltd on July 20.

Future Enterprises Ltd is also facing two petitions by its creditors to initiate insolvency proceedings against the company.

Naveen was the only Commonwealth Games (CWG) medallist in men’s freestyle who took part in the selection trials held at the SAI centre in Sonepat, Haryana on Aug 30. The trials were organised to pick up the Indian team for the upcoming World Championships.

He had won 74kg gold in Birmingham. However, the Haryana wrestler decided to change his weight category and compete in 70kg trials to increase his chance of winning a medal at the Worlds.

India had won four gold and two bronze in freestyle wrestling at the CWG. The other gold medallists Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Bajrang Punia (65kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg) were given an exemption and allotted a berth each in the team while the two bronze medallists Deepak Nehra (97kg) and Mohit Grewal (125kg) skipped the trials.

The World Championships is scheduled in Belgrade, Serbia from September 10.

India’s highest-ranked golfer, Anirban Lahiri, has signed on to play in the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf. Lahiri, ranked 92nd in the world, will play his first tournament at an Invitational in Boston this week. A press release from the organisation announced Lahiri’s decision to join the new tour.

Apart from Lahiri, five other golfers Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, Harold Varner III, Marc Leishman and Cameron Tringale also joined the tour from this week.

Lahiri, the only Indian to have a full-time card on the PGA tour, will become the second from the country to feature in the rebel tour (Viraj Madappa had played in the inaugural event).

Economist Abhijit Sen, a former Planning Commission member and one of the country's foremost experts on rural economy, died. He was 72.

In a career spanning more than four decades, Prof Abhijit Sen taught economics at Oxford, Cambridge and New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, and held several important government positions, including the chair of the Commission of Agricultural Cost and Prices. He was a member of the Planning Commission from 2004 to 2014, when Manmohan Singh was the prime minister.

In 2010, he was awarded the Padma Bhusan for public service. When the NDA came to power in 2014, it appointed Sen to head a high level task force to frame a long term grain policy. Sen was a vocal advocate of a universal public distribution system for rice and wheat.

Sen, whose father Samar Sen was a World Bank economist, studied physics at New Delhi's St. Stephen's college before switching to pursue a doctoral degree in economics from Cambridge University.
