There was no trace of Tapi Mra, the first mountaineer from Arunachal Pradesh to conquer the Mount Everest, and his assistant Niku Dao.

The two were reported missing since they had embarked on scaling the state's highest Khyarw Satam peak (6,900 metres) in East Kameng district.

The application process for the Delhi Model Virtual School (DMVS) began on Aug 31 . The school is for classes 9-12.

Jharkhand police on  Aug 31 arrested suspended BJP leader Seema Patra, wife of a retired IAS officer, on allegations of torturing her 29-year-old tribal help Sunita.

Acting on a tip-off from a government employee, the Ranchi Police had rescued the woman from Patra's residence last week and recorded the domestic help' statement on  Aug 30 before a magistrate.

Patra had allegedly kept the woman captive in her residence in Ranchi's posh Ashok Nagar area for several years.

Patra was suspended by BJP after a video of the woman, Sunita, narrating her ordeal, went viral on social media with demands for Patra's arrest.

Governor Ramesh Bais too asked DGP Neeraj Sinha as to why no action has been taken against suspended BJP leader.

A Cambodian psychiatrist treating victims of the Khmer Rouge and a French environmentalist cleaning up Indonesian rivers were among the winners of the 2022 Ramon Magsaysay Award -- considered Asia's Nobel Prize.

The annual award, established in 1957 and named after a Philippines president who died in a plane crash, honours those who have performed "selfless service to the peoples of Asia".

The foundation that runs the award announced four winners in an online announcement.

Among them was Sotheara Chhim, 54, a psychiatrist and survivor of the murderous, ultra-Maoist Khmer Rouge regime that killed nearly a quarter of Cambodia's population through starvation, overwork and mass executions in the 1970s.

French environmental activist and filmmaker Gary Bencheghib, 27, was given the award for his efforts to clean up Indonesia's polluted waterways.

Filipino doctor Bernadette Madrid, 64, got the award for setting up child protection centres across the Philippines to help domestic abuse victims.

Japanese opthalmologist Tadashi Hattori, 58, was honoured for providing free eye surgeries in Vietnam, where such specialists and facilities are limited. 

Mikhail Gorbachev, who as the last leader of the Soviet Union waged a losing battle to salvage a crumbling empire but produced extraordinary reforms that led to the end of the Cold War, has died at 91.

Though in power less than seven years, Gorbachev unleashed a breathtaking series of changes.

But they quickly overtook him and resulted in the collapse of the authoritarian Soviet state, the freeing of Eastern European nations from Russian domination and the end of decades of East-West nuclear confrontation. His decline was humiliating.

His power hopelessly sapped by an attempted coup against him in August 1991, he spent his last months in office watching republic after republic declare independence until he resigned on December 25, 1991.

The Soviet Union wrote itself into oblivion a day later.

India can become a middle-income country and reach a per capita income of USD 10,000 or USD 20 trillion economy by 2047 if it manages to achieve a sustained growth rate of 7-7.5%, said Bibek Debroy, Chairman to the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) - Prime Minister, on Aug 30.

India currently has per capita income of USD 2,000 and is categorised as a lower middle-income country. For India to become a middle-income country today, it should have a per capita income of USD 6,100. Debroy admitted that inequality in income widens when there is a fast economic growth and said that the government has been trying to plug the gaps when it comes to inequity in accessing education, health etc.

Debroy was speaking at an event to release a report -- Competitiveness Roadmap for India@100 -- which has been drafted in a collaborative endeavour between EAC and PM, The Institute for Competitiveness (IFC) and Professor Michael E. Porter and Dr Christian Ketels from Harvard Business School.
