Ali Sabry returns as Sri Lanka's Finance Minister as Opposition to move no-confidence motion against Rajapaksa government

Sri Lanka's newly-appointed Finance Minister Ali Sabry, who resigned from the post within 24 hours of his appointment, returned to the position on April 8 and would head the government's negotiating team at the IMF as the island nation struggles to combat the unprecedented shortage of foreign reserves.
Former Justice Minister Sabry told Parliament on April 8 that he had resigned from the post to give way for someone more suitable to accept the post.
However, since no one came forward to accept the post he decided to continue as the Finance Minister.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had appointed Sabry as the Finance Minister on April 4 after sacking his younger brother Basil Rajapaksa, who was at the centre of anger within the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) coalition.
However, he submitted his letter of resignation to the President within 24 hours amid mass protests against the government over alleged economic mismanagement.
President Rajapaksa had not accepted Sabry's resignation.
The government issued a gazette with names of the 24 members of the Cabinet who had resigned last week to facilitate the Rajapaksa's attempt to form a Unity cabinet with the Opposition.
All Opposition parties, however, rejected the offer.
The Opposition backs the public protests happening all over the island, demanding the resignation of the president and the entire Rajapaksa family.
Sri Lanka is scheduled to start talks with the IMF on April 11.
The talks would lead to a possible bailout, including assistance on restructuring foreign debt.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since gaining independence from the UK in 1948.
An Indian credit line in a special economic relief package has only provided a temporary solution.
India had recently announced to extend a USD 1 billion line of credit to Sri Lanka as part of its financial assistance to the country to deal with the economic crisis following a previous USD 500 billion line of credit in February to help it purchase petroleum products.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's main Opposition party SJB on April 8 announced that it will move a no-confidence motion against the government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa if it fails to take steps to address the concerns of the public facing hardships due to the worst economic crisis.
Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa also called for the Executive Presidency to be abolished, saying power should be divided between the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.
Parliament has failed to reach a consensus in three days of debate on how to deal with the economic crisis.
The President and his older brother, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, continue to hold power, despite their family being the focus of public ire.
Five other family members are lawmakers, including Basil Rajapaksa, Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa and a nephew, Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa.
The Sri Lankan government has appointed an advisory committee comprising eminent economic and fiscal experts to provide guidance on addressing the current debt crisis and engaging with the IMF and other lenders as the island nation struggles to combat the unprecedented shortage of foreign reserves.

A haunting image of red dresses hung on crosses along a roadside, with a rainbow in the background, commemorating children who died at a residential school created to assimilate Indigenous children in Canada won the prestigious World Press Photo award
The image was one of a series of the Kamloops Residential School shot by Canadian photographer Amber Bracken for The New York Times.
It was not the first recognition for Bracken's work in the Amsterdam-based competition. She won first prize in the contest's Contemporary Issues category in 2017 for images of protesters at the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.
Her latest win came less than a week after Pope Francis made a historic apology to Indigenous peoples for the “deplorable” abuses they suffered in Canada’s Catholic-run residential schools and begged for forgiveness.
Last May, the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Nation announced the discovery of 215 gravesites near Kamloops, British Columbia. It was Canada’s largest Indigenous residential school and the discovery of the graves was the first of numerous, similar grim sites across the country.
Indigenous peoples elsewhere in the world featured in two other of the annual competition's top prizes. The winners were chosen out of 64,823 photographs and open format entries by 4,066 photographers from 130 countries.
Australian photographer Matthew Abbott won the Photo Story of the Year prize for a series of images for National Geographic/Panos Pictures that document how the Nawarddeken people of West Arnhem Land in northern Australia fight fire with fire by deliberately burning off undergrowth to remove fuel that could spark far larger wildfires.
The Long-Term Project award went to Lalo de Almeida of Brazil for a series of photos for Folha de São Paulo/Panos Pictures called “Amazonian Dystopia” that charts the effects of the exploitation of the Amazon region, particularly on Indigenous communities forced to deal with environmental degradation.
In regional awards announced previously, Bram Janssen of The Associated Press won the Stories category in Asia with a series of photos from a Kabul cinema and AP photographer Dar Yasin earned an honourable mention for photos from Kashmir titled “Endless War.”
Yasin, together with Mukhtar Khan and Channi Anand, won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in feature photography for their coverage of the conflict in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
