Harsh Kumar Jain to take charge as Indian envoy to Ukraine

  • Diplomat Harsh Kumar Jain is set to take charge as India's new envoy to Ukraine, the Indian embassy in Ukraine said.
  • At present, the embassy is operating from Warsaw in Poland amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
  • Jain succeeds Partha Satpathy as the Indian envoy to Ukraine.

SSS chief Raju Shetti announces snapping of ties with MVA, accuses Maharashtra government of ignoring farmers

  • Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana chief Raju Shetti  has said that his outfit was snapping ties with the ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi over various farm issues.
  • He said the decision was taken in the party's executive meeting in Kolhapur, which also endorsed the move to remove its lone MLA Devendra Bhoyar from the party.

Chakmas, Hajongs protest in Delhi against 'racial profiling' by Arunachal govt

  • The Chakmas and the Hajongs staged a protest in New Delhi against their alleged racial profiling by the Arunachal Pradesh government through a special census.
  • On August 15 last year, Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu had announced that the Chakma and the Hajong settlers would be relocated outside the state. Chakma organisations claimed that training of government enumerators in this regard was scheduled for April 5  at Diyun circle under Changlang district.
  • The protestors submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah with a set of demands.
  • Rup Singh Chakma, president of the Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Students’ Union
  • claimed  that the Chakmas and the Hajongs, who migrated during 1964-1969, are the citizens of India as per the Indira-Mujib accord of 1972 and Section 5(1) of the Citizenship Act of 1955. Those who are born in India are citizens by birth too, he further claimed.
  • Displaced by a dam in the then East Pakistan (present day Bangladesh), the Buddhist Chakmas and the Hindu Hajongs were resettled in Arunachal during 1964-69 by the central government.

US announces USD 100 million in additional military aid to Ukraine: Blinken

  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced April 5 another $100 million in American military aid would be sent to Ukraine following reports of atrocities committed there by invading Russian forces.
  • Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the UN Security Council that the atrocities committed by Russian troops are no different from terrorists like the Islamic State extremists as he demanded immediate action to bring the Kremlin's forces to justice for "war crimes".

ADB projects India's economy to grow by 7.5 per cent in FY23; to pick-up to 8 per cent next fiscal

Asian Development Bank on  April 6 projected a seven per cent collective growth for South Asian economies in 2022 with the subregion's largest economy India growing by 7.5 per cent in the current fiscal year before picking up to eight per cent the next year.
