Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok announced his resignation on Jan 2 amid political deadlock and widespread pro-democracy protests following a military coup that derailed the country’s fragile transition to democratic rule.
Hamdok, a former U.N. official seen as the civilian face of Sudan’s transitional government, had been reinstated as prime minister in November as part of an agreement with the military following the October coup. In that time he had failed to name a Cabinet and his resignation throws Sudan into political uncertainty amid uphill security and economic challenges.

Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk, who has been using social media to recruit people, has disclosed that Indian-origin Ashok Elluswamy was the first employee to be hired for his electric vehicle company's Autopilot team.

Before joining Tesla, Elluswamy was associated with Volkswagen Electronic Research Lab and WABCO Vehicle Control System.

He holds a bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the College of Engineering Guindy, Chennai and a Master's degree in Robotics System Development from Carnegie Mellon University.

Musk recently tweeted that Tesla is looking for hardcore Artificial Intelligence (AI) engineers who care about solving problems that directly affect people's lives in a major way.

The job application was simple with interested candidates were asked to fill fields like name, email, exceptional work done in software, hardware or AI and drop their resume in the PDF format.

Musk is the wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes, with a net worth of around USD 282 billion, most of it in Tesla stock.

RBI gives approval to Fino Payments Bank's international money transfer service

Customers of Fino Payments Bank will be able to receive remittance money sent from overseas as it has been granted approval by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to offer the international money transfer service.

Fino Bank has received the RBI approval to commence the international remittance business under the Money Transfer Service Scheme (MTSS) . The lender will undertake inward cross-border money transfer activities in association with an overseas principal, the details of which are being worked out.

The customer segment of Fino Bank at the middle of the pyramid is targeted to families of many of the people working in foreign countries.

The money remitted by family members abroad can now be directly withdrawn at the nearest micro-ATM or Aadhaar-enabled payment services (AEPS)-enabled Fino Bank's neighbourhood merchant point.

The payments bank said that going forward, it will be open to partnering with more leading money transfer operators (MTOs) to widen its horizon across different countries. The bank said it also has plans to commence outward remittance services soon.

Fino Bank's network of over eight lakh merchants across the country, as of September 30, 2021, provides convenience to access domestic as well as cross border remittances .

Fino cited a recent World Bank report that said India is expected to be the largest recipient of remittances globally in 2021 with an expected receipt of USD 87 billion.

This is expected to grow by three per cent in 2022 to USD 89.6 billion as a large number of workers are expected to return to the Gulf countries, as per the World Bank.

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Jan 1 has said that a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the stampede at the famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in which at least 12 people were killed and 20 others injured.

The Lt Governor said he spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and briefed him about the incident.

According to officials, the stampede that occurred near gate number three outside the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine atop Trikuta hills was triggered by a heavy rush of devotees who have come to pay their obeisance to mark the beginning of the New Year.

Ortega established relations with China in 1985, but after he lost the presidential election in 1990, the government of Nicaragua's new president, Violeta Chamorro, recognized Taiwan.

The Nicaraguan government broke relations with the Taiwanese on Dec. 9 and last week it seized the former embassy and diplomatic offices of Taiwan, saying they belong to China. However, China's new embassy is located elsewhere, and it is unclear what China will do with the Taiwan building.

ATM service charges increase, to cost Rs 21 per transaction from Jan1

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) across banks are all set to increase service charges per transaction from Jan 1, following an order from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and customers will have to Rs 1 more beyond the permissible free transactions for cash as well as non-cash purposes.

As per the RBI notification dated June 10, 2021, from January 1, 2022, banks have been permitted to charge Rs 21, instead of Rs 20 with applicable taxes, if any, shall be additionally payable.

However, the customers are eligible for five free transactions (inclusive of financial and non-financial transactions) every month from their own bank ATMs.

They are also eligible for free transactions (inclusive of financial and non-financial transactions) from other bank ATMs viz. three transactions in metro centers and five transactions in non-metro centers.

The last change in interchange fee structure for ATM transactions was in August 2012, while the charges payable by customers were last revised in August 2014.

The RBI has notified the changes from January 1, 2022, citing the increasing cost of ATM deployment and expenses towards ATM maintenance incurred by banks or white-label ATM operators.
