The Jammu and Kashmir Police said on Jan 1 that one of the terrorists killed in the Anantnag encounter on December 30 last year was likely to be the last surviving militant involved in the Lethpora terror attack of 2019.

Three militants and a soldier were killed in a nightlong encounter on December 30, 2021, in the Dooru area of Anantnag.

A total of 40 CRPF troopers were killed in a fidayeen attack on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in the Lethpora area of Pulwama district on February 15, 2019.

Russia Foreign Minister denies official recognition of Taliban authorities

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has emphasized that official recognition of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan which took power in August last year is not possible despite maintaining working contacts.

Official recognition of the government of the Taliban movement in Kabul will depend on how their promises are fulfilled, including on countering threats emanating from the territory of Afghanistan, stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
Further, Russia maintains working contacts with representatives of the Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) who came to power in Afghanistan.

Russian Foreign Minister recalled that the Russian side delivered several consignments of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in November and December, and also helped Afghan students get to the Russian Federation to continue their studies.

Earlier, Russia delivered to Afghanistan the third batch of humanitarian aid weighing 36 tons, consisting of food and medicine in December.

Meanwhile, 200 passengers, including Russian citizens and Afghan students, who are studying in Russia, arrived in Moscow by special export flights of the Russian Defense Ministry from Kabul.

In the period from August 26 to December 1, 770 citizens of the Russian Federation, the CSTO member states (Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia), Ukraine and Afghanistan were evacuated from the territory of Afghanistan by military transport aircraft, and more than 100 tons of humanitarian cargo were delivered.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Jan 4 will lay the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut. The University, being built at an expenditure of Rs 700 crore, will be established at Salawa and Kaili villages of Sardhana town in Meerut.

The PMO said the upcoming university is in line with the vision of Modi to inculcate sporting culture in the country. It also stated that the government is working to establish world class sporting infrastructure in all parts of the country.

The university, with modern and state-of-the-art infrastructure, will have the capacity to train a total of 1,080 sportspersons.

India has supplied the next batch of humanitarian assistance consisting of 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, Covaxin to Afghanistan, the External Affairs Ministry said on Jan 1.

A statement by the MEA stated that the humanitarian assistance was handed over to the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kabul.

The release said that another batch of additional 500,000 doses would be supplied in the coming weeks.

India has committed to providing to Afghan people humanitarian assistance consisting of food grains, one million doses of COVID-19 vaccine and essential life-saving drugs.

Earlier last month, India delivered 1.6 tons of medical assistance to Afghanistan through World Health Organization (WHO).

The Taliban took over control of Kabul on August 15 and following this the country has been battered by deepening economic, humanitarian and security crisis.

A combination of a suspension of foreign aid, the freezing of Afghan government assets, and international sanctions on the Taliban have plunged the country which was already suffering from high poverty levels into a full-blown economic crisis.

Sri Lanka has agreed to sign a fresh deal with India to lease out 14 out of the 99 tanks at the strategic World War II-era oil tank farm for 50 years in the eastern port district of Trincomalee, Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila said.

Gammanpila said the deal will be signed next week after getting approval from the Cabinet.

The new agreement will be an extension of the 2002 agreement with the local operators of the Indian Oil Company, LIOC.

MHA extends validity of FCRA registration of NGOs, Missionaries of Charity ignored

The Union home ministry had on Dec 31 extended the validity of the FCRA registration of NGOs by three months till March 31.

However, organisations such as the Missionaries of Charity will not be eligible for the extension benefits as their applications for a renewal of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act registration have already been rejected, according to a notice issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The Centre, in the public interest, has decided to extend the validity of the FCRA registration certificates of NGOs up to March 31, 2022, or till the date of disposal of their renewal applications, whichever is earlier, in respect of only those entities that fulfil certain criteria.

The MHA, on December 25, rejected the renewal application of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa in Kolkata, for not meeting the eligibility conditions under the FCRA as some adverse inputs were received.

In a statement, the MHA also said it did not freeze any bank account of the Missionaries of Charity, but the State Bank of India had informed that the organisation itself had sent a request to the bank to freeze its accounts.

Several political leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, slammed the Centre for the rejection of the Missionaries of Charity's FCRA registration renewal application.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed all district collectors to ensure that no unit of the Missionaries of Charity operating in the state faces any financial crisis and, if necessary, to use the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to help them.
